[laughter] it occurred to me to write about matthew brady eight years ago after the civil war he led one of the great scientific surveys of the west where the people he has to who was becoming the airport -- and important american photographer the first time photography had been used this way as part of a scientific expedition. zero sullivan was a protege of brady there probably met on staten island where brady had a home in the 1850's. well he was running his duty -- studio where timothy o'sullivan grew up, i realized there was not a first-rate book about mathew brady that astonished me and all of us know about the name of mathew brady. and increasingly in the last couple years have become aware of his photographs of rigo through the winter 50th anniversary of the civil war. when i started to think about doing this it was a lesson of how little i really knew then how little i knew that was accurate even after spend one year reading about him and doing research to write the proposal. wishes has struck me given the industry of scholars that if there was not a good book about mathew br

photographers like matthew brady and alexander gardner with primitive cameras and horse- drawn dark roomsht on to the battlefield. >> this is a collection of tintypes. they are all civil war era. >> michael rose is a historian with the atlanta history center. he says civil war tintypes make us feel closer to that conflict. >> you can really look at these people and see what they were as individuals. >> these images were taken on lookout mountain right after the battle of chattanooga. one of the most photographed places of the war was right here on point lookout. the civil war was the last time tintype photography was used on the battlefield. until now. ed drew is an aerial gunner with a california air national guard and a student at the san francisco art institute. he brought an antique tintype camera on his recent tour in afghanistan to photograph his air combat unit. >> we are the guys who fly into the most dangerous locations to save people's lives. there was one aspect in particular i really wanted. that was for them to bear their soul into the camera and for it to be shown on the act

matthew is spelled. i think he was generally known as m b. brady. there were many of his images reproduced in harbor's weekly and for a while they credited it to mathew the brady. it seems if they had gotten it wrong brady would have corrected them so i am going with one tee, most people do >> two questions. how long do they have to stay still for? >> it depended upon the light that was available, the kind of atmosphere. early on with daguerreotype, it could be many, many seconds, up to maybe a minute. there is the beautiful, beautiful photograph of henry james as a little boy with his father, very touching, his father sitting in his chair and young henry has his arm on his shoulder but at least is touching him and there is also similar in a way to the great photograph of lincoln, the most personal in a way photograph of lincoln with his son tad where lincoln is sitting in his chair holding a book and tad is dressed very much like his father and a little suit but tad is kind of touching his father too. partly because they had to steady themselves be

this is a famous photograph of matthew brady. [inaudible] the navy yard bridge. it's like the 11th street bridge on the bridge on 13th street. it's the navy yard here. after john shoots lincoln. he come across the bridge and meets up with davey harrold a. they escape. uniontown shows -- they were around town. and still not even to the day, i guess, sure what they're doing there. they were probably up no good. [laughter] this is 1887 hopkins map of the city. this is a historic district. it was formed as a historic district in 1978. you see monroe street. this is mlk. these are the original street names. and founded in 1854 union town. kind of a branding thing. uniontown. they took the name of the first 14 presidents. this is franklin piers the president. this is 14th street, jefferson street. today the w street. you can see washington phil more. it's rumored i have a connection to them. [laughter] i try not to share that. [laughter] you can see douglass' property is the biggest property in the town, than is still this is today the national park site. these are now
