here is what matthew dowd said about that on this show last night, watch. >> the people that want somethingsh, when it social security, medicare, choice, guns, you will not be able to accomplish it when you are not in a democracy. so, the only way you can receive the will of the voters in this country, or in any country, is through a democracy. so, if democrats run on the campaign that there is strongest's on and emphasize those issues, as we see in michigan and other states, they can win. >> can a message about democracy beat out a right fearmongering message over borders and crime? >> first of all, the states -- the eight, -- the ten states with the highest crime rates, eight of them are run by republican governors. they actually have higher crime rates. when bill clinton passed the crime bill in 1993, we hit the largest drop in violent crime we've had in modern american history. it did not come back until the last year of donald trump's administration. i have no idea of why the democrats would run away from the crime issue. and by the way, this country needs immigrants. i like immigrants

political strategist and former republican matthew dowd and msnbc political analyst were keena.ing my political panel this morning and i wanted to start with you. are you at all surprised. you've been in this space for this awhile. or is there anything really left to surprise you matt? with somebody about rick scott and cotton gonna campaign with herschel walker in this ongoing scandal? >> well good morning. i'd like to say that i'm surprised. but i'm. not in this moment and when this all broke, herschel walker was in the midst of. there's i watch the gop circle the wagons around the worst reprehensible candidates in the country. people forget what happened in alabama, when jones was running against more. it accused them of molesting teenagers and a verbal herbal nut. and 95% of republicans of roemer and he lost 1.5% against that herschel walker is gonna get 90 92 of the gop vote. and he's gonna get 80% of the evangelical vote, the white evangelical vote in there. so i'm not surprised that we have a political party today that's completely adopted and the ends justify the means a

> joining me now is maria teresa kumar, president and ceo of vote latino and political analyst matthew dowd, the chief strategist of the bush/chaina 2004 presidential campaign. it feels to me like the biggest retrenchments led by maga republicans have been in states that have actually progressed. arizona used to be an anti-king holiday state, then a john mccain conservative state, and now it's actually got two democratic united states senators. it's seen as becoming a bit more progressive. you're seeing texas, which demographically is changing. there's lots culturally going on in places like texas, nevada, they're fighting really hard to pull that backwards. georgia. and the things that these places have in common are lots of immigration. lots of brown people that are turning voting age who are u.s. born and they're able to vote. and that feels like that's triggering a lot of this backlash. what do you think? >> that is exactly right. and that's one of the reasons why every single state you mentioned, voter latino has been working in for the last decade if not more. in arizona, we're expect

matthew dowd is country over party and msnbc contributor. i want to dig into a poll. we know many voters will be casting ballots with anger on their minds. we don't know which side will be angrier. how did that come through on this poll. . >> you can see it take you through the numbers. this is the bottom line number here. this is the generic ballot. republicans with a one-point advantage among likely voters. take a look inside. this is what you're getting at here. we asked this question here. do you consider that the other parties's agenda, if left unchecked, would destroy the country? among democrats, 81% have that view about republicans, among republicans basically identical. 79% from that view. you talk about what is motivated, what is driving voters in either party in this election. it is a lot of negative energy about the other party. a lot of fear about the other party. a lot of reaction to the other party. the other thing that's interesting that goes hand in hand with that is, well, which side is more motivated by that phenomenon. and this is an interesting fi

. >> let's bring from political analyst matthew dowd. matthew, good morning.want to talk about the midterms in a moment. first on the attack on paul pelosi. of course, this does not happen in a vacuum here. we have seen the numbers of threats toward political figures rise and not just threats violence. how do we break the cancer of violence? >> what we all know is dangerous thoughts lead to dangerous words and dangerous acts. the way to stop it is people have to stop out against it. not just say i'm against violence, but stop with the rhetoric and divisive words. we know where it leads. it led to january 6th. it led to a number of incidents. my guess is all that led to this. each side of the aisle, and i think the democrats have done a good job, but republicans have to preempt the dangerous thoughts and words because we know they lead to violent acts. >> matthew, there is urgency because we are ten days out from the midterms. in key states, including arizona, we see election deniers. people believe there was widespread fraud patrolling the drop-box locations.
