phil mattingly starts us off. what are the feelings among the white house officials about the trip, as it wrapped up? >> you know, anderson, in talking to white house officials over the course of the last several weeks about the broad outlines of their efforts related to the one year mark of this invasion, i am not sure at this moment you could say this could have scripted a better 72-hour period for their goals. there was the shock visit to ukraine, which is kind of a jolt to the collective system of the world as the president stood side by side with president zelenskyy. there was a speech that the president deeply wanted to deliver that was not just laying out the broader stakes here but also elevated them as well. then there were the myriad of meetings with key u.s. allies providing a personal commitment, a reiteration, of u.s. alliances and the value of them, but also the steadfast effort going forward on what is a war that shows no signs of ending anytime soon. and i think it's those meetings that will probab

phil mattingly, cnn, the white house. >>> u.s. financial markets are hoping to keep the momentum going when trading begins on wall street in just a few hours. stock futures are looking to open but of course that could change. stock futures at the moment mi mixed picture. wednesday the dow gained ground late in session but then finished flat. the nasdaq surged 2% and the s&p 500 closed more than 1% higher. it was spurred by the announcement that inflation is easing and that the federal reserve will be hiking interest rates by just a quarter percent. matt egan has the details. >> the inflation is not over, but it is shifting. the 25 basis point rate increase is the smallest since this fight against inflation began back in march. the fed is still trying to slow this economy down, to knock inflation down, but it has gone from slamming the brakes on the economy to tapping the brakes. and that is an important shift because it lowers the risk that the fed ends up causing an accident either in financial markets or in the real economy or i

cnn's phil mattingly leads us off with that. phil?> reporter: you know, pamela, that speech was supposed to be the corner stone of this entire trip, at least what was publicly known about this trip. that has obviously shifted dramatically, almost as dramatically as the president's visit to kyiv. dramatic in the sense that it was so secretive in nature leading up to it. remarkable because of some of the elements in the lead-in, this is a u.s. president traveling to a war-torn country, in a city that had been under fairly regular bombardment, where the u.s. had no military assets on the ground, no control of the air space above them. it's never happened before. and yet those were the stakes, that was the rational behind president biden's visit. a visit he had been basically pleading with aides to try to set up for the president of the months that led to intensive background effort by a small circle of aides to put it together. if you want to know how this was received, well, this is how president zelenskyy framed it. >> translator: this

cnn's phil mattingly has more. >> reporter: for president biden one press conference, two very significant news developments. one of which was expected, the announcement that president biden will be traveling to poland in commemoration of the one-year anniversary of the russia's invasion of ukraine, the other very much was not and actually wasn't even rolled out without a question to elicit the response, and that was related to yet another object being shot down by u.s. fighter jets that was near or around u.s. air space. now, that came just six days after a chinese spy balloon was shot down over the atlantic ocean. apples and oranges in terms of what these two objects actually were when you talk to u.s. officials. the difference are critical. another decision, how quickly the decision was made by president biden to give the order to shoot down the object. officials say they first became aware of the object on thursday evening, president biden was briefed about the object on thursday evening adds well. on thursday -- or on friday morning he was told by the pentagon that they recommended he

phil mattingly reports from the white house. >> reporter: for nearly a week president biden has said nothing about what was an unprecedented three days, three u.s. fighters shooting down three separate unidentified objects. it raised a lot of concerns and a lot of alarm. and lawmakers on both sides of the iaisle had called on the president to explain what was happening and what the administration was doing about these objects. that changed on thursday. president biden speaking for the first time on the issue detailing how those three unidentified objects were very different from the chinese spy balloon that had been shot down prior, are likely something that had been happening over time and just picked up by radar that had been expanded. and also that there were a significant number of steps that u.s. officials are now taking to try to address these objects going forward including this as the president said -- >> make no mistake, if any object presents a threat to the safety and skirt of the american people, i will take it down. i'll be sharing with congress these classified policy p

phil mattingly, thank you very much. let's go live to kyiv right now. cnn's chief international correspondent clarissa ward is standing by. how is president biden's visit being received where you are right now in ukraine? >> reporter: i think it's fair to say, wolf, that the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. there was a lot of buzz this morning as social media images started leaking of this massive motorcade passing through town. a lot of people wondering whether it could be the u.s. president. and then after president biden had left the square just behind me, we saw a steady stream of ukrainians coming through, taking pictures of the wreath with the u.s. flag on it. and when i spoke to some of those people, they were saying things like, wow, it's amazing. it's exciting. one woman said, the big boss came to town. we talked to another group of students, who underscored while 24 was a very important symbolic gesture of support and they hoped it sent a strong signal to the world, they also hope it will be followed up by more in the way of that hea

cnn's phil mattingly is at the white house for us. does the white house see this as their last best chance to get beijing to change course? do they believe all of this is imminent? >> they don't believe it is imminent but it is very clear the public posture the white house has taken over the last several days is very intentional and underscores a palpable concern about both what they're seeing in the intelligence they've gotten over the last several weeks and about what this may mean going forward. i think part of the issues that you've heard from u.s. officials is the belief that the final decision has not been made yet. as they have laid out some of this intelligence to allies, as they've made public some of their concerns, at this point it underscores the scale of the concern at stake here. they've also made very clear to the chinese the stakes that are at play. take a listen to how jake sullivan frames things. >> we're not just making direct. how things wouldd closed doors. >> you know, the sub text here is that there is intent be

so, phil mattingly is out front at the white house, these are breaking new details. so phil, what more do you know? >> erin, one of the questions has been the biden administration's contention that several balloons traverse at least parts of united states during the trump administration, senior trump officials saying that they have no knowledge of these actually happening. we are getting a sense of what the biden administration is talking about. this comes from our colleague who reports, according to a assessment from april of 2022, it lays out how in 2019 when donald trump was president of the united states, there was a balloon, a chinese operative balloon that crossed over hawaii and through florida at one point, as an example of one of these basically issues occurring prior to this administration. this is part of an intelligence process that the advisor alluded to earlier today saying that when the biden administration came in and made collection of intelligence a central focal point. they were able to track back and pick up signals of what they have may have miss
