maude made the decision to have an abortion.s a year before roe versus wade. pretty remarkable stuff. i mean, you still don't see much discussion of or certainly someone deciding to have an abortion on television. >> well, let me tell you something about that. when we -- the network didn't wish to do that, of course. we -- maude had a friend in that first episode before she had the abortion who was having her fifth child, couldn't afford the four she had. wouldn't think of an abortion. so, we tried to make the discussion as even as possible. nothing happened when that show went on the air. nobody -- i mean -- >> no reaction -- >> a handful of phone calls existed, of course, but nothing really happened. when it went into rehearsal, the religious right had gathered. they knew it was coming -- i don't mean rehearsal, i meant into the repetition, when it was repeated later in the spring. and they were ready. then they started laying down in front of a car in new york, in front of my car in l.a., carrying on. but america was exists i

[laughter] i had nothing else to do. i wanted to write it 20 years before i actually wrote it, made notes, have people saving scripts and going through correspondence. and i had a pile of stuff when i finally started five years ago. it took me about four and a half years. >> you said the reflection on your life for this book made you realize how hard it had been to be a human being. >> i bet you've noticed. the circumstances of birth can vary and some have it so hard. i don't mean to compare myself to people across the globe, but just being a human being is no matter the circumstance. >> you had it hard because your dad went to prison and your mom turned you over to relatives. >> my father went to prison for three years when i was nine years old. i lived with one uncle then another. i lived with my grandparents. i

when you talk about maude in your book. you talk about her being your favorite character or person from whom you received most, gave and received most. >> she was and reconstructed emotional liberal. she did know -- she was like me. she came from a place -- i compare myself often with rob reiner who i consider a second son, and who considers me a second father. rob knows everything he is talking about inside out. he has an opinion about something politically he knows it inside out. i am empathetic, i feel like go i feel where i have every conviction my instinct is right, it could be wrong. i don't know the details like a wish i did. i am not scholarly. that was a lot. she came from the right place, she didn't have -- have all the conviction in the world. i didn't know about my relationship to the character until i was midway, three quarters of the way through this book. i learned so much about what preceded. i finished this book in my 91st year. i worked on it for four state -- straight years but i had been making notes for

great counterplay with mod in fact, i would never forget this on me and my shadow they would do it in maude insisted to play the shadow. esther was fabulous we introduced an episode and i think before the show went off the air in california and executive been new york was on the air wondering and that is out happened. >> directing several of your shows as every betty's favorite episode of mary tyler moore it was for writers or directors is you have several directing credits. did your writing help your directing and how is that possible with more than one aspect of doing the show? >> the first time we did "all in the family" i think i did it because it wanted to give it my way. i had someone behind me helping me with a camera because on all the shows that were with a live audience 240 people on average sat in the stands it is worth mentioning that one-acters work for a live audience they are looking at that audience is the left -- is the laughter is holding they are holding that there is a reaction you get that because they ride the audience response that was the signature difference for the

. >> who, by the way, has a restaurant called maude, which was named the best new restaurant in l.a.very much, but that's okay. he's a gorgeous little guy. >> beautiful. look at your family. you have the cutest family. >> pork chops. >> i'll show you how to make a really simple -- a modern pork chop in a way. >> i like that. >> some sage, into a little cream and we're going to let that infuse. bring it up to a boil and just sort of turn it right down. just a really gentle simmer. over here, the pork chops are caramelized, couple of minutes on each side. once you're happy with how it cooks, take it out of the pan. and you'll see all of the flavor that is down -- all that brown stuff is exactly what you want. you don't want to pour that down the sink. next, i take -- >> i like to yell when curtis is around. >> me too. >> i like when you yell, kathie lee. makes me happy. >> i know. get in line. you caramelize that, give it a few minutes. it has all of the color that was in the pan ends up in the onions. you can then deglaze it with a little white wine. i got some of this fabulous chardo
