commissioner maufas: is there? >> this moment, not really. commissioner maufas: thank you. can i ask one more question? you mentioned when i came over to welcome you all that you were able to bit nervous. how do you feel now? >> i feel good now that everybody knows about my school. i feel good. commissioner maufas: this is a welcoming place. and what you all to know that. thank you for coming. superintendent garcia: i guess the question a lot of people would want to know -- all of you attended a high school. what is the difference between the schools you attended and where you are attending today? >> regular school, it is like the teachers -- we come in class and we learn about -- they just throw us textbooks and tell us to read. we don't want to learn about that. we want to learn what we want to learn about, like what are we interested in. i want to go to college and play football. it is like regular school teachers are just giving us textbooks and what we have to learn about. superintendent garcia: any others? >> when i personally started, i did not like the school. when

commissioner maufas and i went out and actually, we were all very impressed. this, i think, the fact that 60% of the -- inmates there come from our schools and that over 80% of them come in with lower than a sixth grade education. some of them at a third and fourth grade education. so the idea that we bring education to students who have not been successful in our schools i think is not only tremendous as -- but visionary. and it is definitely a gift to everyone who is in the correctional facility that is able to partake in your program buts the will see a gift to us, san francisco unified that the students are given another chance to be successful. also it gives me very -- and i have to say commissioner maufas and i observed a science class where the students explained to us their project and quite frankly we didn't understand it, there were words we could not pronounce. we just kind of walked out of there like wow. we didn't know that. so you learn something every day. what i have learned is that this project, this school, it really reflects the values i thi

commissioner maufas? commissioner maufas: -- [applause] commissioner maufas: really bleelve and i wanted to make certain and i reiterated this when i spoke at the rules committee, that it was imperative that this policy is not a surprise to incoming families and our families remaining here. i know when my daughter was enrolled in school, even though there wasn't the policy, i understood there was an issue about where i live and where i wanted my daughter to go to school. it wasn't a mystery to me because i asked and i wanted her to get into a school and i had to find out. it wasn't mysterious and i don't think it has really truly been mysterious. i believe folks generally know. i'm grateful we have this policy and we can advertise it at every opportunity so it's as general knowledge about the feeder system and everything else that we have, nutrition policies we, have what no sodas, just commonplace and across the board, translated in all the languages we have and i know you took notes on that and will do

commissioner maufas. i was there. would you please, commissioner maufas. commissioner maufas: select committee heard our summer school options and we heard from our city partners and all of the summer resources that they will be having. i know we had a summer resource on march 19 where many families wept to find out summer resources, programs, camps, activities for families and also go to that web site -- do you happen to know it, president mendoza? commissioner maufas: we talked about our summer school options. president mendoza: commissioner fewer do you want to talk about the plans for ninth grade. commissioner fewer: during that meeting, we presented some data about the ninth graders who received d's and f's during the fall semester and our inability to serve during summer school since our budget canceled summer school. these ninth graders, this is the first year that these ninth graders will have to graduate with the new graduation requirements. this meeting smarked interest of the mayor to support the commitment they had already made to help our stud

president mendoza: commissioner maufas and commissioner fewer. commissioner maufas: i don't expect an answer because we are in the process of discussing this. as you can see, we are in the midst of a bit of a struggle with questions and process. because renewal seems inappropriate, it just is. you look like a new entity trying to start off using the same name, but you are doing something different than the previous associations. because this renewal has constrictions, we are restricted by that. the idea of renewing for five years is not something that i would be in favor of. as you are trying to get traction on what you're trying to do, there is a learning curve to do it on your own. i think we desperately need the help of the district and i don't think you can get it in the five-year plan. that means you do something without really coming back and getting assistance. my question is, is there a possibility when they are sent back to us to reapply? is that in the mix at all? are we still wrangling the application -- renewing the application period

commissioner maufas: it is good to see you again. i just wanted to acknowledge that i have visited my local library at bartlett and 24 with my granddaughter, who is just an infant, but at my surprise, rediscovering the library myself, but also, when i pulled up with a stroller, there was already a line of strollers for folks in my neighborhood who already know about the many activities that are available there for young families. i just think that this is such a great introduction to the library again, i have rediscovered my local library with my granddaughter, which i, sort of thought that she needed to be around kindergarten or first grade, but that introduction to reading and activities and visiting the library can happen much earlier, and i am very excited to be able to go with her on a saturday or thursday afternoon when they have those programs. i think that is a great addition the i had never experienced at the library, but i can also share that with my granddaughter and tell my own child that there are programs there for youn
