the public and for commissioner maufas and commissioner yee who were not there. is we have to make some choices here. we've got to say what things are we going to continue to collect the same data on because it was so much. we needed -- this was baseline data on a huge number of questions. all the information, it's interesting and compeling to people and we all express that we would like to continue doing everything. and then also it was -- we were told that, first of all, if you remember we had grant funding for research related to an assignment policy. second, the huge amount of staff work was basically done on people's own time that's all of sthrem the same jobs. these the same people who are doing the -- actually serving our parentses in the educational placement center and in the weekends and the evenings they were creating these maps an chars and we can't do that. we can't impose on them in the same way. it's when they don't have the research component. we have to decide what we want. it has to be more manageable. and then we have to figure out what resourc

i want to thank commissioner maufas for her leadership and virginia marshall. a number of commissioners were at sun set elementary school for read aloud day march 2nd. abraham lincoln had their b.s.a. performance. brotherhood, sisterhood performance on march 8th. and i attendanted the ignite performance on march 10th that brought young women, high school and college students from all over the bay area to get them activated in the political process. it was great. i met some young women from san francisco public high school. let's see, claire had their starlight celebration on march 10th. and i also joined commissioner ye and commissioner fewer at the galley yo event. i had never met a u.s. astronaut before. so that was very exciting. and just a shoutout for the san francisco p.t.a. they're having their reflections award ceremony on april 14th and bike to school day april 12th. thank you. >> i'm shocked that you didn't mention that yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the founding of the girl scouts of america and both commissioner murase and i were there. the

commissioner maufas: the highest rated. >> what was the other? commissioner maufas: the highest rated. >> let's be clear about that. commissioner fewer: i would like to emphasize that we have had to make some administration changes in the zones. we are very conscious about the communities. many of those changes were driven partly by community requests. these are communities that had administration there that were much loved in the community but as persistently consistently stated, in the lower 6%. it is hard to make this kind of changes once administrators institutionalize into the committee to make that kind of change. strong communities, not strong academic foundation. we had to make some of those changes. it was upsetting to also focus on the school board that a lot of administrators with the court -- we think we're going to work out did not. we do not have a huge selection of principals who want to work in the schools. it is hard work and you have to be transformational. there are people looking at you and over your shoulder all the time. giv

we encourage you to come visit your school sites and ask commissioner maufas. she has done six and seven more to go. reflections on relevant teaching practices at o'connell, please come out. thank you for your support. president yee: thank you, commissioners. questions. >> could you name the school? >> i have the list on the attachment. >> commissioner wynns: i give a little history. you know, i -- and we talked about the funding model and what's good about it and what makes it a little weak in some places. and made some reference to a time when we actually were part of sponsoring a bill in the legislature that would have funded peer resources, not everywhere but made funding available and actually we wrote it for us, because we thought that conditions that existed in schools in peer resources in san francisco, like full-time teachers and having a class which you got credit and other things, you would get state funds if you had some of these things unlike an after-school program. sadly, it was when that bill was hijacked by the legislature after columbine to tu

we will wait to see commissioner maufas. i am the executive director for the improvement grants for the unified school district. i started last year as a consultant at the beginning of the project. [no audio] that is an overview of where we are -- [inaudible] i will start by saying the thing -- before the grant came out of an effort prior to the school district [inaudible] it created a zone that [inaudible] with 15 schools in the different areas. these are some of the regions that were created out of commitment to social justice and equity and building from previous efforts at reform including star and dream and the empowerment zone dialogues and research on high performing schools and integration of the strategies implemented. as well as a personal commitment from the superintendent to be accountable for the transformation of the designated schools. besides forming this new empowerment zone -- the superintendent zone offices, the other resources of the central office were brought together around this issue. so in human capi

maufas when your truth was not favored by others. when it is ok to protect the teachers in the zone and i happen to be a teacher in the zone. so i applaud you for your bravery. secondly, i would like to speak to -- as a teacher in the early education school, the proposal to address the budget dilemma by cutting over 200 educators, para professionals and teachers would greatly compromise our program and put it out of compliance as well as the teachers our students will once again be subject to turnover. in the last 15 years that i have been there, there has been constant turnover. and that makes me sad. not only does that make me sad, but it also it belies the truth -- your statement that you are in the best interest of the child. that you make decisions based upon that. that is incongruent according to your actions. last year, i lost an innovative, intelligent creative paraprofessional and chose not to wait around until the layoff notice was rescinded. i'm forced to provide the same level of education without that intelligent, creati
