where are you asking the residents in maui to evacuate to?the hotels and condominiums all have protocol. i believe if you're staying first, second and third floors you have to evacuate. if if you're higher up, you're fine. we have some areas, two of our high school gymnasiums have been opened up as evacuation areas. some of the community have opened up their doors, some of the churches have opened up their doors. but our community centers, people are allowed to go there and park and wait. some areas there's no water and no restrooms. we told people that they need to keep that in mind. for the residents if they've got relatives or friends that live outside the tsunami zones, they're urged to head there. >> are you still asking folks at this point to go ahead and evacuate? we are looking at the shots of congestion that has taken over the roads there. are you suggesting that people get in their cars and continue to evacuate to the places you had just mentioned, or what is the protocol for folks right now? >> well, i don't know what areas you are

four waves have hit on the island of maui. the largest was two and a half feet which falls below the threshold so evacuations probably weren't necessary but better to be safe than sorry. now to the weather channel and our jen carfagno. let's reset for a second and start from the very beginning because this is something that happened after a 7.7 earthquake hit off the coast of british columbia earlier this evening. >> reporter: veronica, good morning. and it was a 7.7 earthquake off the coast of british columbia. when the size and the strength and the magnitude of the earthquake goes up there's a higher risk of a tsunami. i want to just take you back to the japan tsunami. that was an 8.9. when you go up into such magnitude it's an exponential increase in strength and effects. so the difference between the 7.7 earthquake and an 8.9 earthquake is significant. and that's important to know as well l. the 7.7, while it can cause a tsunami, obviously, has the ability to cause a massive tsunami as the 8.9 back in 2011 in japan. also,

we're expecting it to be about the size of you know, five feet over in maui, as well as over in hilo. so avoid driving tonight. vertical evacuation. if you're along the coastline, don't go in a car if you're in a high rise. you can get above the fourth floor. you should be fine. especially with the size of this tsunami. we're thinking between four and five feet above sea level. limit your communication, please. and then these are the things that you should be gathering. gas, cash, food, water and of course, medicine if you can. as far as what we can expect, this is what we're expecting. this is at 10:28 tonight. you can see smaller waves are expected everywhere else. like ben was sayinger it won't come in a series of waves like you think of when you're surfing. it is a big surge that comes in. the first surge expected at 10:28 might not be the biggest surge. there will be waves, hours after that. the ocean will not be the same for a couple days with all kinds of strange currents. weird tidal changes. if you're along the coast, take precautions. we're asking people to evacuate and evac
