the seven students are part of a culture exchange program called kibo for maui. >> kibou for maui. >>ui which's ministry of foreign affairs. the goal, to give these lahaina teens hope. the driving force behind this trip is the co-founder of odyssey nature japan. >> when i saw the wildfires, then i immediately said okay, this is something that we should do for the kids in lahaina. this is also one of them. >> reporter: just over a decade ago, mikou was a survivor, just like these kids. in 2011, miku's hometown was completely destroyed by the great east japan earthquake and the tsunami that followed. it killed tens of thousands of people, laid waste to entire towns, and triggered the fukushima nuclear accident 85 miles away. miku survived by evacuating with hundreds of others to the third floor of her elementary school. >> our town was destroyed. we lived with my grandparents for a month. and after that, we have to relocate to temporary housing. and we lived there for two years. same height as the tsunami. >> reporter: but now, showing the kids her rebuilt hometown, she says it's living

nui or all of maui, including lahaina.awaiian barkcloth clothing that native hawaiians would wear. so the pieces that we have here, as soon as you walk into hale kukuna, are some of my favorite pieces. this first piece is a malo or a loin cloth that would have been worn by the men. and it's dyed in natural dyes from different native hawaiian plants. and then this pa'u, or this skirt, that would have been worn by the wahine, or the women at the time. this lei on the mannequin is also made from kapa or the barkcloth. and it's always my favorite thing to point out to people, because a lot of times, they think it's just a dried-out lei that we have on the mannequin, but they're really excited when they find out that it's also made from the kapa. so the space is open monday through sunday, seven days a week, from 8:00 to 4:00. we teach classes throughout the week as well, so we do lei making, hula, ukulele, hawaiian language.

on august 8, 2023, there were many heroes that exhibited courage and bravery as wildfires ravaged maui on hawaii island. today it is my honor to recognize o one of those heroesa third generation mariner and co-owner of one of maui's oldest family boating companies. when the coast guard called for help, riley and six other trilogy captain and crew members answered the call, rescuing count s people who had jumped -- countless people who had jumped into the ocean to escape the flames and transporting them to safety. battling 80-mile-per-hour winds, intense heat and smoke, riley saved lives as they conducted emergency rescues throughout the night and into the next morning. for his courageous effort, the congressional medal of honor society selected riley from over 200 nominees nationwide as the 2024 single act of heroism honoree. it's an award that's much deserved. and his service is a reminder of the many everyday people who stepped forward and became heroes on those fateful days. so today in addition to recognizing riley, let us lift up and celebrate all of our heroes who risked life and

we chosen rehousing on maui. i understand that, but it's not going to be all of the solution here. we actually do need some form of rebuilding to pull this off over time. it's not really going to do the job. the federal delegation, the state of hawaii, have all asked fema to come off of the rehousing and find a solution here and instead moved to the actual construction of at least some temporary transitional housing. on land the state of hawaii is making available for you to do that. the housing itself, which would be transitional, or at least transitional to put in about 1000 units that are desperately needed to cover a gap in the housing availability, and that gap is caused not only by the shortage of housing on maui in general, but by the fact that there are many people that are being housed in hotels and other ways that are not eligible for fema housing right now. they've been disqualified for many reasons. and so there's two solutions here. the rehousing is not going to work. the rebuilding has to happen in some way, shape, or form. some form of rebuilding transitional housing
