maura barrett is following the latest report for us. what do we know?> well, chris, we are waiting any minute now for the madison police chief to come out and address the media to give any updates. so i'm going to be watching that with one eye and we can toss to that. there have been multiple injuries but don't know much more information in terms of how many or the terms of injuries they're experiencing. we do know that this occurred just in the last hour and a half or so, a public safety alert went out to people in the area at 11:20 central time 12:20 eastern time, an hour ago, and this is at the abundant life christian school in east madison, outside downtown madison, so it is within the city limits that's why the city police is responding. dade county is responding. we know police are actively investigating the shooting. active and ongoing investigation. they still have the surrounding roads blocked off. unfortunately as you know we've covered several school shootings i've covered an attempted school shooting in this same area, as police are locking

let's go to maura barrett on this story. the michigan story goes back several months.p us understand what happened and what we're hearing from the administrator's attorney and the university. >> reporter: kate, there are two vastly different perspectives on how this unfolded. one is the one you laid out. both parties acknowledge this interaction happened in a private conversation between ms. dawson and two women at the conference in march. these weren't public comments being allege. ms. dawson denies those quotes. our team spoke with ms. dawson's lawyer who said what happened from ms. dawson's perspective two women approached her and tried to engage her about the university of michigan campus, saying it's unsafe for students. ms. dawson disagreed and said jewish students were just as included as any other students. there was a disagreement between these women and it escalated. ms. dawson said she said jews and palestinians share an ancestral connection to the region. her attorneys tend to file a legal argument and we reached out to the university of michigan, but have

maura, good to have you here with us. and you understand how this job works, you know, with the pressure that comes with it, watching what's played out over this last, these last few days, what advice would you give to speaker johnson he has to remember that he is speaker of the whole house, and that responsibility is to make sure that the institution itself gets the job done. >> the people you know elected him as speaker through by electing house republicans to have the majority, a slim majority. we're still in a divided government. and so he has to get the job done. congress has the power of the purse. we have a separation of powers for a reason. and so i don't think that having these outside influences that don't have any, you know, they won't be felt. the effects of a government shutdown, that's not helpful. and so he has to stay the course of what is what he can do to get the bill across the finish line. and really any majority, the power they have, especially as speaker, is their ability to get to 18 for a vote. >>

we're going to watch out for that, maura. i know the police chief as he was giving the news conference, got a little emotional, didn't want to be there giving that update. no one does. no one wants to talk about anything like this. no one wants it to happen in their community or at all. you have been monitoring reaction on the ground among parents and those in the neighborhood, what have you been hearing? >> yeah, katy, it's understandably just devastating to have to think about your community in this way as the police chief noted and something interesting that he pointed out was that his officers are trained to respond to shootings like this, four times a year. they most recently just had one two weeks ago, and he said the protocol that they practice is what they did once they got on the ground today. he said that they are trained to stop the killing, stop the dying and find out who did this. the officers did just that, but it is absolutely heart wrenching to think about the fact that christmas, the holiday season is just a
