maura barrett is covering it from los angeles. what did we learn from the hearing, and who was there, by the way? >> reporter: not alec baldwin. we expected to see him for the first time appearing virtually, but yesterday midday he waived the right to his appearance, said he accepted his rights and pled not guilty. the court is allowing him to continue working, filming on the set of rust, which is set to pick up filming again this spring in montana with a few conditions in that he's not allowed to have access to firearms, he's not allowed to consume alcohol, and he's only allowed to interact with other witnesses on the "rust" set, they're not supposed to discuss the case at all. we did see hannah gutierrez-reed also involved in the case, very briefly. it was an incredibly quick hearing. she was read her rights as well. her defense attorney asking for her to be able to keep a firearm within her home because she had been receiving some threats after personal information had been shared about where she lives and she has a restraining

nbc's maura barrett is live from los angeles. with all that's going on, you wonder if california or, for that matter, the rest of the country can catch a break? >> reporter: somewhat of a break but not for long. luckily the incoming storm won't look like what we saw this weekend, a wild weather weekend for all of the west coast. tons of snow coming in southern california through downtown l.a. amidst the pine trees, you can see the snow. i live in chicago. i'm subbing in here in l.a. we haven't seen this kind of show in the midwest. out east in the san bernardino mountains, they saw more than 5 feet of snow across three days. it's record-breaking. they have never seen that before. they or warning people to stay off the roads as they anticipate more snow and rain this weekend. even up north, the sierra nevada have soon more than 10 feet. they're expected to get another feet of snow over the next couple days. luckily we saw, in the same videos of the rv falling off, we saw several spinoffs, luckily everyone okay. nothing crazy in te

nbc's maura barrett is covering this story for us. inside the courtroom and are we any closer to understanding a motive for this shooting right now? >> reporter: well, chris, testimony is ongoing as we speak. remember, the suspect facing charges including first degree murder, assault, and bias motivated crimes or hate crimes. what we've heard so far is both from the police officer, the first police officer who entered club q at the time of the shooting and one of the detectives who's been investigating the crime. we've seen several images from the surveillance video inside as well as photos that detectives have taken from inside club q, we're not at this time able to rebroadcast those images. what we're able to see is pictures of shell casings littered across club q, a lot of details of what they found in terms of the firearms that the suspect allegedly brought in to the club when he entered for the shooting, as well as images of the bodies of some of the victims. as you can imagine, a lot of gasps and tears from members inside the co

thanks to maura barrett, as well. >>> we're also following breaking news out of los angeles.st in the murder of bishop david o'connell. o'connell was found shot to death in his home over the weekend in what law enforcement called a targeted attack. nbc news has more now from los angeles. bring us up to speed. i know we don't know much about the arrest in this case, but what can you tell us about the bishop's death and how the community is handling this loss? >> reporter: so the sheriff's office announcing an arrest in the murder of the bishop known as bishop dave to those who knew him and loved him. his death is a shock to the community. he was found shot to death in his home saturday afternoon at 69 years old. deputies saying it was a targeted attack. he worked as a priest and bishop in los angeles for more than 45 years where he spent a lot of time focusing his ministry on the poor and immigrant communities in south los angeles. the people he worked with and served described him as a man of the people and a peacemaker saying no place or person was ever too dangerous for him
