maureen kelly takes a look at the stop asian hate movement. >> over the past year. we've seen shocking acts of violence against asian americans. many elderly here in the bay area and across the nation literally thousands of anti-asian incidents in this past year with a huge percentage of them coming from california to northern california. some of the crimes believe sparked at least in part by language. the former president use when talking about the pandemic referring to covid-19. is the china virus or kung flu. the growing number of violent images also mobilized a movement hashtag stop asian hate and that is instigating change. >> state assemblyman david chiu is pushing a bill that would create a 24 7 statewide hotline for victims and survivors of anti asian hate to be able to report. >> crimes and incidents that are happening so that law enforcement can follow up as well as to ensure that victims and survivors get the assistance that they need a second bill would expand compensation and improve services for victims of hate crimes but also fund restorative justice

maureen kelly kron 4 news. berkeley police have arrested a man they say is responsible for a series of hate crimes. >> the 30 year on year old man is accused of vandalizing a home on warning street with graffiti referencing people of jewish faith. this happened on april 29th later that same day he's accused of destroying religious artifacts at a jewish synagogue on oxford street and leaving behind a handmade swastika. then in the early hours of april 30th police say he was caught on surveillance video burglarizing a jewish community center on bancroft way. he now faces several charges including hate crimes. the california department of justice is launching a new bureau to try to stop hate crimes. state attorney general rob bonta announced the creation of the racial justice purell font is hiring attorneys to work for his new bureau within the civil rights enforcement section. they're going to take on constitutional matters and hate crimes on behalf of the state. we'll also review any bias by law enforcement whil

kron four's maureen kelly reports the suspect has a long history of run-ins with police.is the photo that was blasted out by police as they were searching for the suspect after the brazen daylight attack tuesday, according to a law enforcement source. >> police say they recognize the suspect as 54 year-old. patrick thompson from previous encounters. according to the source, he's been getting arrested in the tenderloin for the past 20 years. here's video of the crime scene from the citizen app. police allege he walked up on the 85 year-old and 63 year-old victims from behind and stabbed them several times. a witness says the suspect was already holding a large army style knife looking angry as he headed towards the bus stop at market where it intersects with 4th and stockton streets. another witness who snapped this photo of the suspect as he walked away. didn't want to appear on camera as he speculated on the motive may be hey, i mean, he went straight to them to the bus stop. and he just tech to people and left. >> to asian. ladies told other ladies. that's not even payi
