we get this developing news from maureen naylor. she's live outside gilroy police headquarters. what can you tell us? >> reporter: i spoke with police in the laugh last hour, they tell me this was not the officer's service weapon, but his personally owned gun. this all started about 3:00 this afternoon, when gilroy police and fire were called to the officer's home, where he lives with his stepdaughter on the 500 block of el cerrito, after getting reports that the teen girl shot herself in the leg. once there, emergency crews realized it was the home of a police officer. the girl was given first aid, and taken to a trauma center. police say she will survive and is stable. police say their initial investigation indicates she was able to access the officer's personal firearm, and accidently fired a shot into her leg. >> there are laws that govern the storage of weapons. firearms specifically. the circumstances involved in this case, i'm really not sure at this point. the preliminary investigation has been started, and we have to wait until we get the results of that investigation.
