i'm maurice dubois. president obama called his top national security advisers to a meeting at the white house this evening to talk about two unfolding crises. russia sent more troops into eastern ukraine today. more about that in just a moment. and the continuing threat from the sunni muslim terror group known as isis. if anyone thought the president was ready to order air strikes against isis targets in syria, he made it clear today he is not. major garrett is at the white house. >> i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. i think what i've seen in some of the news reports suggests that folks are getting a little further ahead of where we're at than we currently are. and i think that's not just my assessment but the assessment of our military as well. >> reporter: more than 100 u.s. air strikes have hit isis weapons and convoys in northern iraq, but the president said defeating the militants there is not enough. mr. obama will soon send secretary of state john kerry t

i'm maurice dubois, and this is our western edition. one week after isis released that video of the murder of an american journalist, president obama authorized military surveillance flights into syria to search for isis targets, and he had a warning today for the sunni muslim terrorists: >> our message to anyone who harms our people is simple-- america does not forget. our reach is long. we are patient. justice will be done. we have proved time and time again we will do what's necessary to capture those who harm americans. >> dubois: but we also learned today an american has been killed while fighting alongside the terrorists, and that is where we begin tonight with homeland security correspondent bob orr. >> reporter: he grew up in minnesota, a basketball fan named douglas mcarthur mccain. he had minor scrapes with the law, but by the time he died last weekend fighting alongside isis in syria, mccain was an american terrorist known as duale. rebel fighters seeking to expel isis from syria say mccain was killed during this battle near

i'm norah o'donnell with maurice dubois in new york. cbs news has learned that american warplanes in northern iraq carried out the first air strikes this morning against isis. >> president obama authorized a use of force last night to protect americans in irbil. national security correspondent david martin is at the pentagon with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the u.s. has fired its first shot in this new battle for iraq against this islamic group known as isis. a pair of f-18 jet fighters off the aircraft carrier george bush in the persian gulf dropped at least one 500-pound laser-guided bomb on an isis artillery piece that was shelling kurdish positions near the city of irbil. that's a city where scores of americans are operating out of the u.s. consulate there and president obama said last night that he had authorized strikes in the event that isis columns started advancing on irbil. we do not know yet for sure whether the artillery piece has been destroyed, but we do know for sure that the two f-18s are safely off the target
