and the uk government has denied claims made by the prime minister of mauritius that it faces paying a renegotiated deal over the future of the chagos islands. last october, the uk announced it would hand over sovereignty of the islands to mauritius, but maintain a 99 year lease over the uk us military airbase on the largest island, diego garcia. the times previously suggested the payments by the uk government to mauritius could effectively double from £9 billion to 18 billion, but this has been denied by the uk foreign office, who said the figures being quoted were inaccurate and misleading. shadow foreign secretary dame priti patel told gb news the deal is a huge national security risk. >> over the last four months, we cannot forget the fact that starmer's government had been trying to railroad this deal through while joe biden was in the white house and before president trump was inaugurated, because they knew that the americans would run the slide rule over this terrible deal and questioned the whole issue of national security. we know that the mauritians have closer relations an
