. >> it's an unusual pattern, when we think of things like mavericks or the surf competitions here around california. we watch for a westerly swell. in this case it's the wind coming off the storms off the coast of new zealand, pushing a southerly swell toward our bay area beaches. we have that long period swell. that is a piece of energy that kind of moves across the ocean, a long wavelength. as it approaches the coast, you see the 4 to 6 foot waves. on occasion, we get these sneaker waves come in that could be as high as 10 to 12 feet. the rip currents and all the wave action -- the long period swell coming up this weekend and a little bit of a northwest swell making up for challenging swimming conditions at times through the weekend. this is something we have to watch until labor day, monday. then we'll see the south swell drop off. we'll look at that forecast for you coming up in a few minutes. diane? >>> the investigation continues tonight into exactly what caused the explosion at the menlo park lab killing a scientist. the building where it happened yesterday afternoon is shut down
