that's why mavericks has been called. they don't want you to go to the beach and watch the surfing competition. it will be televised. that's the news i have to bring you today. saturday the northwest waves will develop. sunday the swell comes in. 20 to 35-foot waves every 20 to 25 seconds. that's very dangerous for swimmers and boaters. you want to keep that in mind even down in santa cruz it will be dangerous. if you want to hit santa cruz and walk around on the sand, it will be beautiful. just try to stay away from the beach if you can as far away from the ocean -- i would say 30 to 40 feet away at least. we'll see pretty strong waves and they can catch you off guard. spare the air today. air quality certainly suffering. you can see the haze in the atmosphere out there. very thick. 35 degrees in san jose to start. 30 in gilroy. by noon as you break for lunch, your peeling off the first layer. we'll be close to 60 in places like san jose. 57 at noon in palo alto. 59 degrees at lunchtime in livermore. look at your highs t

it will be great for pro surfers at mavericks. as ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty tells us it's also a very serious warning for the rest of us. >> we are here at the beach hotel. this is where they will be setting up a big jumbotron to watch the maverick surf competition. that is because you won't be able to watch it from the beach or bluff. the national weather service is warning of possible sneaker waves hitting the coast this afternoon. within the past month alone, waves have killed three people in the bay area including a man and his nine-year-old son who were swept off the rocks while fishing in the marin head winds. last time we had mavericks unexpected waves broke on shore and swept dozens of boche go -- beach goers. so again sneaker wave warning along the sonoma coastline south to san mateo this weekend. officials have also issued a high surf advisory. that sorts tomorrow -- that starts tomorrow and lasts through sunday. if you do want to catch mavericks because of the niners game a lot of folks will stay home and wa

it's going to be great for the mavericks. for your average boater and swimmer, it is going to be again some wave taz you want to advise extreme caution, maybe not even step your foot in the water. by sunday, waves that could be as high as 35 feet, long duration, 20 to 25 second swells. so again, this is also going to be producing some very dangerous rip currents. advise extreme caution. spare the air for friday. air quality will continue to stay pretty poor up into the north and also the central bay as the air is going to be very stagnant. the wind's not going to move too much. high pressure aloft. it's going to cause you problems if you suffer from allergies. temperatures in the mid 50s across most of the bay area. it's clear in san francisco right now. with just some of that haze lingering around for tonight. weather pattern right now is allowing all of the rainfall and by all the rainfall, i mean every single last drop to push way off to the north. the next closest storm system is 1567800 miles away. and you can thank high

let's share with you what the mavericks forecast looks like. today it was 66 degrees at half moon bay. tomorrow 64, bright sunshine. waves up to 20 feet. the rip current risk is high and off shore wind will continue to 15 miles per hour. monday for the holiday, more sunshine at 62 degrees and again that rip current risk remains on the high side. and speaking of high temperatures today, what a difference a day makes. for the first time this year, we saw 70 degrees across the bay area and that was in oakland. but it was 73 in santa cruz. above average in san jose. average high 57 in santa rosa but instead 65. and livermore and fairfield and concord are the cool spot at 60. currently we have 39 degrees already in livermore. we'll have to double check that. 39 also in santa rosa where the winds are still calm at this hour. we're dropping down to the freezing point again in livermore. in fact tonight's lows sub freezing in many inland locations and then we moderate gradually every single night, overnight. this is san jose with the clear skies. we ha

the mavericks surfing invitational took place at half- moon bay.rfers took on the big waves. we have more on the event drawing big crowds. >> reporter: at the mavericks surf competition those who wanted to see the big waves had to deal with the big wait. >> we were assuming we could of bought tickets when we got here. i did not think it would be sold out so soon. >> all over the world people come here to see people surf at maverick. >> they are watching the broadcast of the greatest surfers in the world taking on the biggest waves of the planet. the viewing was restricted to this parking lot when the authorities chosed the beach after spectators were almost washed out to sea two years ago. they admit this probably makes more sense. >> unless you have binoculars and stuff it is hard to tell who is in what position and who is doing well and who is not doing well. i think it this is safe and sane. >> the fact that it is -- it is surfers and it is this organized amazes me. nothing against surfers at all. >> reporter: one advantage of watching on the sc

they competed today in the mavericks international surf competition. the waves were not quite as big as expected, but they still reached about 25 feet. nbc bay area's kimberly tere's near pillar point and the new ways the fans watched the action this year. hello, kimberly. >> reporter: hello, diane. as you know, mavericks relies very heavily on mother nature cooperating. and this is the first time in three years that competition was allowed to move forward. and surfers and fans were ready for it. three days ago the call went out. nearly two dozen of the world's best surfers answered. just before 8:00 this morning, the famed mavericks international surf competition was under way. >> this is a pretty big deal to fall on a sunday and the weather's beautiful. the surf is up. yeah, it will be cool. >> reporter: this year's winner, peter's mel. the first win for the santa cruz native who has been chasing the title for nearly a decade. they were challenged by we was that reached up to 25 feet. the same conditions that make for awe-inspiring curls for the pros

last year, no mavericks. the year before, no mavericks. and the reason is because the conditions were not right. but this year we are anticipating huge waves. in fact, mavericks organizer jeff clark says that they are going to be completely intense and this is what he had to say. >> when a wave hit the reef out there, it's going to explode on to the reef and the challenge that these guys are going to have it getting down the face of these waves. this is going to be very intense for these guys. they are going to be pushed to the limit. >> in fact, the waves are supposed to be so large this weekend up to 20 feet perhaps even larger that we'll have men riding mountains. this is absolutely why the national weather service has issued a high surf advisory for this weekend for this entire san mateo coastline. so again mavericks taking place this sunday january 20th. the big question is, how can we all watch, right? remember, the last time mavericks did take place was in 2010 and people were injured getting too close to the shoreline. don't get on

surf's up and mavericks is on. half moon bay and pillar point getting ready for the biggest party in the past few years. jean elle joins us in half moon bay. this is always evolving, for the fans and the surfers. what are the changes this weekend? >> reporter: one of the biggest changes is the beach where all the spectators are used to going will be closed for safety reason. contest organizers are throwing a festival here where you can watch all the action on big screens and updates to that 49er game will be provided. but the main event is catching the surfers on 30-foot waves. >> not rolling then going up. they're going -- >> reporter: mavericks contest director jeff clark says big, powerful waves are heading toward half moon bay, big enough to hold the contest sunday. >> we're expecting the waves to be anywhere from 30 to 40 feet. >> reporter: for the first time in two years, 24 big wave surfers from around the world are heading to half moon bay. five will be riding special surfboards clark designed to be faster.
