max, thanks so much for joining us. max: thank you for inviting me.mily: you were born in the ukraine. how much of a connection do you still feel to the people and the country? max: anytime i am told that -- oh, you are russian, i know you are, i feel the need to say, no, actually, i am a jew who was born in the ukraine. it is still a part of what defines me. i haven't been back in a long time. on occasion, i miss it. emily: what do you miss? max: the people are very genuine. they don't pretend to be anything they're not. emily: what do you think you would be doing if you were still there today? max: probably writing code of some form. i was already sort of proto-entrepreneurial when i was there, so i probably would be starting a company of some sort. but -- more or less the same thing. emily: have you been following what has been going on there recently? i mean, are you worried about the civil war? max: yes, i am very worried. i don't think it's possible not to follow it. as an engineer and an entrepreneur, i always sort of, well, let me think throug

max: it's your baby.was this gangly teenager that was growing up into being a beautiful company. emily: after you sold paypal, you could have retired. you didn't. i know it was actually a hard time for you. max: it turns out i am much happier when i am working. and i am not working, i am kind of a bummer. i bum people out. everyone around me was sort of, oh, man, don't come over, you're sad. emily: so you started slide. max: i started a bunch of things. slide was the thing that i ultimately wound up running. as i found out, not the thing that i deeply cared about at the product level. i was not in love, and still am not in love, with entertainment, but ultimately was not nearly as successful than i thought. strictly because the products didn't roll me out of bed every morning. emily: you ended up selling to google, $182 million, what was it like working at a company that you didn't start? max: it was very weird, because i was -- i have never worked for anyone before. i had the privilege and opportunity to

max: we do. tom: i saw john perretti do a presentation and he told the origin tale, i'm sure you have seen this many times and he said, when we started buzzfeed we started with the presumption that the ads, the banner and pop-up ads, he said, we start with the presumption that banner ads and public ads suck and we're going to invent a new form that people like as much as the rest of our content and really gave a big impetus to what is called sponsored content. is that 100% of your revenue? aneri: i think so. i do not have to think about that in my area as an editor. tom: you have no involvement in creating this sponsored content. max: no. there is a chinese wall. tom: how about at vice? rocco: that worked for so long so it is church and state and there is a third prong which is technology. technology, you look at ink on paper for so long. technology develops more quickly as we move through time. and you see pop-up ads. those quickly lost their value. you are seeing native advertising. whatever wo

max: >> i'm not sure that we are -- max: i'm not sure that we are just all the bombing to extent that bomb is necessary to keep isis from advancing them to keep it in check but i think it may make sense and especially if we have good targets that we're act of servicing. it may make sense but i just don't think we have to be running close air support for an iranian directed offensive but that's what we should not be doing. what we got to be focusing on is, when we get into more options side of the meeting is without to be focusing on building up indigenous sunni forces that will oppose isis. michael: audrey is a distinguished professor of international relations at george mason university and the author of how terrorism ends. you've made a great contribution to our understanding of terrorism. you published an essay in this months foreign affairs where you caution policymakers that isis is not al-qaeda. you wrote that it is a pseudo-state led by a conventional army. can you address this and what it means for our current policy and what policy might flow from it? audrey: sure. there are

[laughter] max: i mean, i have a personal set of ethics. i hope our writers do too. my ethics can be used to trap us, to give us an idea that we are in a publicly accountable box. the executive editor of gawker says that ethics is a measure of how much scurrilous and this your brand is -- how much scurrilousness your brand is willing to bear. we are in the business of giving information. it's the question of, how much are you willing to get that in ways that people might not like? we are willing to do stuff that a lot of folks are in -- uncomfortable with. tom: what would you get fired for at gawker? max: not doing a good job. we have not once had a writer fired over a story. plagiarism, generally, we suspended a writer for even the hint of plagiarism on a post. it is not about pissing off an advertiser. tom: you just recently wrote one? what is the essence of it? shani: the central concept is -- i canvassed people across my editorial. my thought is that it needs to make it easy for reporters to do their jobs. that, to me, means giving everybody guidelines. not neces
