i am max darrow. after weeks of anticipation , the chinese new year parade took over san francisco streets last night. huge crowds turned out to downtown san francisco for the largest lunar new year parade outside of asia. the prey kicked off at market and second street. and snake 1.3 miles through the city past union square and through chinatown. it was all a celebration of the year of the dragon. the most popular of the 12 zodiac animals. da lin was out in the crowd soaking in the sites, sounds and emotions. >> reporter: the chinese new year parade started off with a bang. actually, a lot of banks to ward off evil spirits and bring in good fortune. not just the biggest outside of asia, but perhaps one of the most colorful and loudest parades. maria pereira loves it and she has attended almost every single one since 1992. >> the culture embracing the traditions , the color, it is fascinating. and uplifting. we make this year she brought her kids and her friends kids . the kids were amazed by the sigh

our max darrow has the story. >> reporter: we have the lowest crime rate in 2023 than we've had in ten years, not including 2020 when we shut the city down. >> reporter: that's the word from london breed and sfpd data shared by the office that is publicly available, shows the reality. when comparing january 2024 to january of 2023, property crime is down 32%. violent crime down 11%. during the same time frame, the numbers show a 39% reduction in larceny theft, which includes car break-ins and retail theft, and 11% reduction in robberies and a 20% reduction in burglaries. looking at january 2024 verses the three-year average across january 2018 to january 2022, the numbers show property crime is down 40%, and violent crime down 24%. >> all of the work that we are doing with alternatives to policing, with our police department, with the community based organizations, how we are bringing all of that together has led to significant change on the streets of san francisco. >> reporter: the numbers may be a reality. but for some, they are just numbers because that isn't the reality they are e
