let's go to windsor castle where max foster has been watching today's events. you covered the royal family for so long. what stood out to you today? >> reporter: well, i think it was a very poignant tribute to prince philip who wanted something just like this. you mention covid restrictions there, it did add poignancy to the imagery today, with the queen sitting alone, with the choir completely on their own, just four people allowed in the choir. talk about reconciliation, so much has been said about the breakdown and rift, william's generation of the family. starting to see healing there as well. i think if prince philip was looking do you know how events unfolded today, he would be quite pleased. ♪ >> his kindness, humor and humanity are his service to the nation, thbeloved son will pronounce. ♪ >> so we were seeing the casket lowered into the royal vault under the chapel. prince philip's body will lie there until the queen dies, then they'll be buried together in a side chapel. the love story isn't over. very poignant as well. poignancy struck me today to se

cnn royal correspondent max foster joining us now from london. max, we know that the prince had just been in the hospital for some time. and yet, i think this was somewhat surprising for many people to learn this morning of his passing. >> well, he's been in hospital so many times, hasn't he? he's always come out. hearing boris johnson talking about prince philip's carriage driving. he was very energetic, very busy. even until relatively recently. and he was back at windsor castle having been in hospital for a month, initially with an infection and then had a procedure on his heart and clearly, he deteriorated recently. and it was just a few hours ago that he sadly died. the family would have been informed before us. they clearly got hold of everyone, including prince harry in california, but thoughts currently, of course, with the queen who is in windsor castle on her own. they were in a bubble, philip and the queen, in windsor with some key staff. and now she's on her own. and as boris johnson was describing there, he really did steer -- help st

i want to bring in max foster. reactions around the globe to the death of prince philip. what is the latest there tonight, which is tomorrow morning where you are? >> reporter: well, the queen is obviously having to deal with what happened yesterday and then also sign off on the funeral arrangements. prince philip was very involved in his funeral arrangements. he didn't want a lot of fuss, but he did want the charities and the causes and the military associations that he built up over his lifetime to be reflected in that. a lot of that won't be able to happen because of the pandemic and the restrictions around that, so there won't be any procession. so what we expect to hear on saturday after the queen has signed everything off is that everything will be contained within the castle walls behind me. perhaps a funeral next weekend, but it will be limited to 30 people under the current restrictions unless some sort of exemptions have been made here. so we're waiting to hear those details. the queen would have wanted prince philip to have a bigger fanfare really. she feels he

cnn's max foster is in winder where this service will take place. . what can we expect? >> well, prince philip didn't want a big state funeral. he wanted a rather muted affair. because of the pandemic he is going to get that. it's going to be a strong tribute towards him because of that. you'll see, you know, the military man being honored, the man promoted causes around conservation for example. but also crucially the consort arguably one of the monarchs in british history. he was her adviser. it's important to see the queen sitting two meters apart from other guests. wearing a mask, mourning for huss her husband. he was deeply religious and she was. this is going to be a somber affair. there is obviously family politics between william and harry in particular. you will see the procession with them walking parallel but with the cousins in between. people reading a lot into that. what they are trying to do, everyone involved here is trying to take focus away from that tension, that rivalry, and focus instead on the duke and the funeral. we also know
