[applause] >> i asked if i could do this one because it is pretty darn important to me. this is the community leadership award. she was a young woman from hunters point that said, most kids in this community who don't believe they will live to see their twenty fifth birthday. she was gunned down at the age of 23, celebrating

one year and a half ago, supervisor david chiu and malia cohen, along with former supervisor sophie maxwell, and the police department, commissioners, including commissioner joe marsh, we met with various members of the community. particularly, district 11 and district 10, talking about violence on our sambar . the community, including a number of resident groups, had appealed to us to come up with some better ideas on how to keep the community safe. being the public safety was the number one concern among everyone, particularly during the very tense situation that occurred a year and a half ago, and as we deliberated within the city administrator's office, we concluded community policing had to take an additional improvement, if you will, by embracing what the community wanted to see. particularly on the muni lines, in areas where there might be isolation that occurred in those areas, subject to activities that would end up being -- resulting in violence. after several months of meeting with this idea, we met with members of the community that said, if you hired from our area and if we use

former supervisor sophie maxwell. she may be here later on today. she was fantastic to secure funds. supervisor cohen alluded to the support from other mr. supervisors. it is my pleasure to introduce supervisor scott wiener. [applause] >> thank you and congratulations to everyone on this amazing progress. all the three branch libraries in my district were open before i took office, so i like to live vicariously through my colleagues to help celebrate something so important. in a time when we all get down on our city government for not doing as well as we want them to do, in terms of services, what our government has been able to do with renovating and opening libraries, helping to build communities in the neighborhoods is critical. i am optimistic for third street. this is a big part of moving this entire corridor forward. i also want to reiterate something the mayor said. i have the fortune of working with malia cohen. we sit on a land use committee together. she is a tenacious advocate for district 10. she is doing a great job and i am proud to ca

these are the challenges supervisor maxwell imposed. i am not concerned that seventh straight -- street would create a bad precedent. i'm encouraged by comments made by mr. -- seventh street is single loaded. if you have an elevated freeway, there is no such thing as having an active street on the other side to respond to. the weaving in and out of tracking the corner was -- [unintelligible] having 100 feet of a garage. i think for me that is a responsible and good idea. this is rarely a bikeway. 100 feet of a garage with people honking on seventh on the bike, there will not see it. it is like a green screen. that is how you perceive the nahyan active use. the building does some amazing things. i am looking at responsible models and i will pause for identification, this is one of them. the height is not an exception. the heights was premeditated in how we looked out what was necessary to rezone the eastern neighborhood. with -- with a responsible attitude toward protecting pdr. this is as close as we could get. i appreciate the summary

ed lee and his staff, with our san francisco police department, with my former colleagues sophie maxwell and now working with malia cohen, the community came together to put forth an idea of putting an incredible chondria of young, diverse, linguistically-proficient individuals -- the men who women -- the men and women who stand behind me -- to make sure our families, seniors, and young people are safe. this is the type of best thinking that we have when the private sector and public sector and nonprofit sectors come together. i want to thank other local nonprofits that have been working for years to think of creative solutions to be a part of this. when we come together, we are at our best in the city. i could not be more pleased to join the mayor and my colleagues, supervisor cohen, all of the city officials, the chiefs in being able to talk about a program that should hopefully make us say for decades to come. we will keep working. we all recognize that this program is only one part of other programs that we need to think about here. we need -- we know that the south is part of the ci
