officials verified that a mayday call came from the flight deck before the crash. a person says there's an engine flameout but it's unclear who made that call. anna coren joins us live from taipei with the latest. so anna what is happening right now with the search going on behind you? >> reporter: john, there are hundreds of personnel here, military and police taking part in this enormous search and rescue operation. as you say, the death toll has now increased to 32. that means that that's still 11 passengers remaining. they believe their bodies are in the river behind us. search and rescue teams have been taking to the waters in these rubber dinghies. dozens of divers have been getting into the icy cold water, searching for these victims. now, as far as the conditions poor visibility, but the river is not that deep only about 2 1/2 meters deep. and they've set up a dragnet about a mile downstream. i don't think the current is that strong. the barge, a short time ago, which is where the divers have been stationed, moved from just behind us to just a little bit fu

from what we can take from that mayday call, there were engine problems. and that would also speak to the fact that within two minutes of this plane taking off from the domestic airport not very far from where we are standing, is that when it crashed. it was that short a period of time. now we know that this particular airline has experienced these problems in the past. they had a major accident back in july, whose 48 people were killed. so this is another accident, which is raising serious alarm bells about the safety record of this airline. certainly as far as the civil aviation authorities are concerned here in taiwan, they are inspecting all these planes at the moment, but yeah, as i say, this investigation is ongoing. the black boxes have been recovered. those cockpit voice recorders and the dash recorder, they have been recovered. so that information is also being analyzed as we speak, and hopefully that will bring to light exactly what happened to this doomed plane. zain? >> we know that 12 people are still living. anna coren there where the rescue

we've got someone saying mayday mayday engine flameout before the crash.? >> it appears as though the pilot were experiencing at least one engine failure. that one engine failure should not be enough to bring the airplane down. airplanes, commercial aircraft that are certified to carry passengers in mainstream are certified to take off fully loaded and lose an engine on takeoff and still climb away from the airport. and then be able to come around and land again. a single engine failure should not bring that airplane down. whether it was a multi-engine failure, both engines failed which is not known, we have to wait for the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder to fully understand exactly what happened. it's still a mystery except it's obviously engine related. >> and it appears the aircraft could have lost power causing that engine failure. what cause a power outage like that or what else could have happened in order to bring the plane down? >> there's a number of things -- for instance the air on takeoff might have hit bird. it's a turbo-prop a
