. >>> let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda with more on what could have used this weird explosion. >> it was the size, the meteor likely being the size of a small boulder. as it decelerated through the atmosphere and started to heat up rapidly, these are the instances where you could see these meteors. of course they leave that streak of light across the sky. sometimes they can explode before they reach the ground. in those instances, you hear that large explosion or the sonic boom that most people are reporting. if any of those pieces survive and reach the ground, they officially become meteorites. from the origin of what most folks heard around the tahoe area, about 400 square miles being able to hear that sonic boom, one of the things scientists will do, you showed that seismograph in your report, they're going to be tracing that as they watch from station to station where that sound wave moved from a to z, they can track the path where this particular meteor has moved perhaps from east to west over the sierra. in the coming days they'll be looking at that seismograph to track

let's bring in rob mayeda who joins us what's in store for our weekend. >> it's certainly more quiet in the weather center tonight. interesting day today. we had colder air come in which was cold enough to support snow showers. here's a view as weake out to mount hamilton. this afternoon, three inches of snow came down as freezing levels did drop a little bit to be about 3500 feet around mid afternoon today. now the rain totals are record breakers, monthly rain totals coming in within a day's time. mostly last night, records all over the place. san francisco, oakland and towards the east bay hills, you saw the problems with the runoff due to one to you two inches it of rain that came down yesterday and lightning the other thing that happened. a very unusual event almost like the great plains outside. directional wind shear above, warm moisture below, 750 plus lightning strikes in the area. beat did have a weak tornado touch down in center county north of sacramento this evening but you can see how all the action is moving to the south. speaking of the south, the grapevine into southe

rob mayeda who is tracking this developing storm from our nbc bay area weather center. rob? >>> raj, right now the heaviest impact with this storm right across the east bay and into the tri-valley. let's show you how it looks. outside around oakland, light rain falling. the oakland a's set to get their home game started after 7:00 tonight. looks like they'll be dealing with light rain. as we go from oakland, this is one place that's been getting hit by pretty good downpours. now the heavier rain has moved off pleasanton. that traffic heading towards you northbound and even southbound, some rooster tails out there on the road. that is from some ponding that is taking place from downpours that occurred within the last half hour or so. now we'll take you in a the south bay, san jose seeing pockets of mainly light to moderate rain at times. as we take you outside you can see the gray skies in an already slow commute this time of day made slower. now the system respons rle for the rain here is a pretty large one and the interesting thing about the moisture instead of going west t

. >>> right now we want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda on the weather.ob it was pretty darn nice out today. >> it was. after last week's weather, a nice finish to the weekend. a few spots including livermore and pleasanton earlier climbing into the low 70s. 69 in gilroy and livermore. much cooler day around san francisco and oakland thanks to a steady sea breeze and patchy, low clouds which hung out around the bay. the breeze is down into san jose, west-northwest of 14 miles per hour. and that's once again going to pump in some low clouds overnight tonight. on the coast, a little drizzle for tomorrow morning. but the trend of the week will be if you like the weekend forecast, you're going to love the weather through midweek and the second half of the week, that's not a typo. 70s and 80s could be back to the bay area by the time we get towards friday. low clouds came inland overnight into the morning. we'll see the same thing happen again tonight into tomorrow morning. and the storm track now is lifting off to the north with the system you see over my sho

. >>> let's bring in rob mayeda as we head into the weekend. >> we are into the weekend. >> and the glass is half full correct? >> it is looking better. we just had an evening update to the computer models and short term for the weekend i think you will like what you are seeing for sunday. not as cold as this time last night. the temperatures will dip into the 30s and mid-40s overnight. right now 40s to 49 in san francisco and that sea breeze is backing off right now. a west wind at 13. temperatures tonight in the 30s and 40s. tomorrow we're looking at temperatures climbing five to ten degrees warmer than today getting to the mid-60s and mid-70s south of san jose for the afternoon. and sunday is starting to look dryer. the computer models are trying to push showers off to the north. and now the best chance of showers will continue for the north bay into monday and begin to slide through the south into the central bay area on tuesday. right now the satellite and radar shows you this system off shore but it is not going anywhere right now. it will hold off for saturday. the winds pick up ou

. >>> let's check in with meteorologist ryan mayeda with a look at weather. you were helping with comcast cares as well. >> milpitas, kris sanchez, marianne favro at the robert randall elementary in mill peat das around 9:00 this morning doing gardening work, work there on the p.e. room earlier before things really started to warm up around the bay area. if you had yard work this afternoon, toasty outside. as you can see from temperatures around the bay area we saw numbers climb. half of the bay area, most inland valleys, south valley into the tri-valley, getting into the 90s. quite a change from the spring so far. san francisco 79. 83 oakland. notice what's happening now. we're seeing 70s around the inner bay as the sea breeze turns stronger. the marine layer is really compressed. 500 feet or lower. most of the cooling we'll see tomorrow will be around the inner bay, probably north bay. notice the wind direction south at 10. that is a cooling breeze in santa rosa. that will eventually push in cooler air into the north bay. active weather across the rest of t

. >>> let's bring in rob mayeda, our meteorologist. rob, the man of the hour here.s happening and when is this all going to happen? >> what's interesting about the storm we've been seeing today, it's really moving 10 to 15 miles per hour across the bay area. almost like a bike ride that this particular storm is taking from san francisco to the east bay right now. around the golden gate bridge, you've got a drizzle storm out there. if you look closely, the windshield wipers are running. the rain falling, not really enough to wet the road. different story in the east bay. it is a mess. you can see rooster tails coming off the backs of those cars there. we've got ponding on the road around the 84 turnoff as you get over to livermore. some really heavy rain coming down right now. temperatures around the area with the clouds, well, 50s outside. remember, yesterday, we were in the low 70s. winds not too bad. we had power outages yesterday evening due to gusty winds around the south bay. so the wind not really a factor for the system. east bay and south bay, quite a bit of

. >>> let's get a check on the forecast with rob mayeda. >> hi there. we're watching not only the chances of seeing rain but some gusty winds picking up right now. 50s to near 60 outside and speaking of outside, let's take you to san jose right now. one of the places starting to see the wind bouncing around our city cam. you're looking at some light rain there moving into parts of the santa clara valley. wind speeds around the bay area right now, gusty winds picking up out of the south, over 20 miles per hour from san jose to oakland so that wind is moving pretty fast. we will continue to see these gusty winds all the way into tomorrow morning. we do have another storm on the way that's going to pack wind and rain. that we're used to. what you might not be used to later tonight is with the wind shear that's starting to move into the bay area, we could see stronger thunderstorms capable of producing pea-sized hail or a little bigner a few instances and we'll show you where we think that will happen. the santa cruz mountains is target to see some of that

. >> let's bring in rob mayeda. >> things are working great for weekend plans.ght we saw 750 lightning strikes around the bay area. we have some cool and breezy conditions outside. mostly 50s right now but the winds gusting around the east bay, winds around 26 miles per hour. gusty this evening. they may pick up more around sfo and san jose. around 9:00 tonight should see wind speeds start to back off and what's left of the showers should start to shut down. still some showers around morgan hill, moving to the south and east. more powerful showers have been flaring up out here towards napa county and selano counties this afternoon. you can see this cell approaching interstate 80 as you approach fairfield. some hail-producing cells that moved out south of rea vista approaching brentwood. the next 15 minutes as the cell weakens may toss some hail your way. but the trend, really, is the real action is moving to the south and east this hour. that trend will continue through the weekend. showers shutting down overnight, clearing skies. sunday, though, will be the war

we're going to check in with rob mayeda. a little more of the same, then what happens? >> things will be changing toward the middle part of the week. not only cooling but chance of some rain coming back to the forecast come thursday. right now in san francisco, starting to see some ghostly cloudy skies to the west. the fog trying to spill in across the golden gate. we'll see patchy low cloud pushing into san francisco. mist along the coast. our temperatures have been dropping to the 50s. the sea breeze which was quite strong this evening has backed off. this is the pattern we're going to see tomorrow. we'll see the winds kicking up during the day. a combination of low clouds surging inland, high clouds coming on top of the low cloud layer. the two will help us cool down a little tomorrow and cooler toward the middle part of the week. the first system, it's putting a dent in this ridge of high pressure which gave us summer-like conditions today. this ridge is going to start to break down somewhat and slide down to the south, allowing another system to follow for wednesda
