rob mayeda is with us. as you know, the weather's so crucial when it comes to these wildfires >> if there's any good news, the winds haven't really been too much of an issue. wind speed at 13 miles per hour. but look at the humidity, down to 26%. but the radar, very interesting. up here to the north, you notice we have some weakening thundershowers that are moving. this is a component of the weather story. we're going to see temperatures climbing back up. so increased heat. continued low humidity. but there will be an increased risk for seeing thundershowers. so the potential of lightning-sparked fires. the real concern will be the thundershowers as they weaken and the cool air comes rushing out of those storms. sudden wind shifts could be possible. as the temperatures continue to climb around yosemite, and our own temperatures set to climb for parts of the bay area. we'll talk about that in the forecast in a few minutes. >>> it started out as a plan to curb prostitution, now it's a way to help the homeless

meteorologist rob mayeda watching that closely.f happy people out there today. >> the pressure is off. it's open stadium. so you have to worry -- august, we should be fine. shouldn't have to worry about any rain. things cooled off nicely. yesterday pretty hot in the valleys. but today, big-time cooldown. san jose now down to 73 degrees. santa clara, about the same temperature. there's oakland, 66. look at pleasonton, the natural air conditioning. livermore and closer to san jose, some of the temperature changes, 16 degrees cooler right now than yesterday at this time in livermore. so the tri-valley finally getting some heat relief. and the cause here, the low clouds. we'll see more of that as we head towards tomorrow morning. they'll break up around lunchtime for inland locations. but out on the coast, one thing to watch, increasing high clouds. seems like it's now the third weekend in a row we have to watch monsoon moisture spilling up out of southern california. that's going to be the case tomorrow especially in the sierra. watch

rob mayeda has been tracking the conditions that firefighters are facing. rob, we're talking about heat, dryness, but also this lightning issue. >> yeah, off to the east of the fire we've been watching this this afternoon, 86 degrees in oak hurst, humidity down to 23%. hot and dry conditions, wind speeds at 18 miles per hour. that's not too bad, but you see up here on the upper portion of the screen we have some thunder showers there off to the east and we will see some rising temperatures over the next few days with continued low humidity, but the thunderstorms may drift a little further to the west and not only could they bring the risk of seeing lightning at times, which may try to spark fires as the thunderstorms weaken, we can see sudden wind shifts, so wind has not been much of a problem today, but as the thunderstorms will be in the forecast the next couple of afternoons, we could see some challenging wind conditions, along with rising temperatures as we head towards the weekend. we'll talk about warming in our own forecast coming up. >> see you shor

let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. and rob, the island hasn't seen this kind of weather in quite some time. >> and there's never been a tropical system that's approached from the eastern spastic to make a strike on the islanden islands. we've seen it come out of the south, but never like this before. right now, tropical storm iselle has winds at 50 miles an hour. it has begun to track away from the southern half of the hawaiian islands. we'll switch to a google earth view of the realtime winds. stronger winds off to the east of hurricane julio, but the big island right in here, in the blue, stronger winds up towards maui and christina loren there, west maui seeing those stronger winds as we switch back to those wind gusts and show you the radar view. we are showing those winds. the stronger winds now starting to branch out a little bit further to the north, up around maui and oahu. and the radar view shows you what is left of the circulation center has reemerged off to the west of the big island. and now those spiralin

rob mayeda has been tracking this for two hours now. rob, it doesn't look like we're seeing much progress. >> well, at least we are now seeing the canes on site. cal transand chp indicating we could be looking at another hour or two. the westbound lanes being shut down due to that accident involving a dry cement truck causing a diesel spill. your alternate is the dumbarton bridge. you can see what's left of the traffic, still stuck on the bridge not going anywhere. every once in a while, we see some of that traffic diverted off to the side. but needless to say, westbound san mateo bridge just shut down right now. traffic being diverted off at clawwitter is and being sent away from the westbound san mateo bridge. the impact on 880, your better alternate is to head down toward the dumbarton bridge, or go back up around the bay bridge, as this closure is likely to stick around for another hour or two. back to you. >> all right, back to our other top story, the death of actor robin williams. you are looking live at the podium outside the ma

let's check the forecast, with meteorologist rob mayeda.or san francisco, it'll keep the light jacket with you throughout the day as we have strong on shore wind, low clouds have come back into the picture for the coast and parts of the bay area, and could see driz until a few areas too. so, one thing that's interesting is the wind have picked up out of the south this morning, if you're hearing extra noise on the north side of san jose, it's because the flights out of san jose international airport. they are taking off to the south this morning if the wind's out of the south this morning, moving through the santa clara valley. right now wind on shore, fairfield of livermore, they will turn stronger. courtesy of a weather system here that is on the approach, pretty impressive one by august standards. this. satellite to be honest looks a little bit more like you'd expect to see in october. you see the systems dropping in from the gulf of alaska. that will probably give enough lift to the low clouds at the marine layer that's 3,000 feet thick.

latest on the wet morning commute in a moment, but let's check that microclimate forecast with rob mayeda, he's in for christina. >> this morning we are seeing rare rainfall across the bay area. moving mainly into the east bay, tracking south into the tri-valley. satellite and radar, you can see how most of the action is across northern california. not much south of oakland or san jose for you this morning. you get a closer view here, you see that the showers are pushing from north to south down into danville, dunn lin, antioch, martinez and concord. that's where most of the shower activity has been for the morning. slowly heading off towards the south and east. showers there around berkeley approaching oakland and some light rain into navado and brief showers earlier around napa. most of the activity will continue to transition off to the south and east. action for the morning around the north and east bay for the afternoon, still mainly dry around san jose. later tonight, we will see more showers dropping down the coast as we transition to a drier forecast by tomorrow, there you see the

now, you promised special powers, rob mayeda. >>> well, we have to see how things fan out. lightning could be lightening up -- let me try this again. lightning could light up the sky in parts of the north bay later tonight. right now we're at 71 degrees in san jose. hazy skies around the south bay. other spots, we're seeing 60s to low 70s. now into the sunshine in san francisco after a foggy start. the low clouds, part of your weather picture on the coast still from pillar point. i think santa cruz will be your nice spot. a fire weather watch in the bay area for parts of -- now into northern napa county and into marin county and solano county and sonoma county. it's extended now as we see lightning strikes spreading into the north bay tonight into tomorrow morning. meanwhile, the bigger picture will show you that it continues up through the state, up towards redding. for now, it's tossing showers off to the east around the sierra. some of that will track closer to us tonight as the upper low is sitting off shore and crosses the coast later tonight. certainly in the north ba

let's check in with rob mayeda for the weather. >>> around sacramento, showers approaching from east to west. very strange. an area of low pressure is moving up through the sierra count counterclockwise rotation. the showers are off to the east out towards sacramento later today. we'll see that moisture spilling into the north bay and probably the east bay hilltops which will obviously make things pretty muggy outside and a chance of showers in the far north bay approaching lunch time and then by 3:00, 4:00, the clouds will fill on in for the north and east bay valleys. increased clouds as we head into tonight. again, this moisture yesterday was actually parked right over southern california. this monsoon moisture which caused flooding and some very active thunderstorms north of downtown los angeles dropped 3 to 4 inches of rain. so it's that low we've been tracking here moving up out of southern california this morning. this is more or less the position that it's at right now right over lake tahoe but during tonight and tomorrow it's going to drift further to the west which will ope

rob mayeda is watching that closely. how much did they get? >> enough to measure about less than a tenth of an inch of rain but it's interesting. much of southern california under flash flood watches. we'll show you that in a moment. the bay area seeing high clouds drifting in and temperatures in the low 60s with low clouds pushed inland be a strong sea breeze which drops our temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees today. we'll see about the same temperatures tomorrow. upper 80s at best in those inland valleys. the morning starting off the low clouds and high clouds increasing during the day and unlike today we'll see a mixed bag of mid and high-level clouds and we're having to add a few showers, possible late in the day and perhaps a better chance as we go to monday and tuesday. all the action to our south and it's been impressive around l.a. and san diego, rain at the dodger game right now and moisture continues to kind of spin from east to quest across southern california. here you see the flash flood watches up in green toward san diego and up

meteorologist rob mayeda here now with your microclimate forecast. >> nice start to the weekend. we had low clouds early. now mostly sunny skies. 75, not too bad. san francisco also looking at some sunshine today. low clouds out around the golden gate. right now numbers still in the mid-60s and upper 60s tonight. lows dipping closer to 60 as we see the low clouds. those will push inland for tomorrow morning. looks like a typical summer pattern. the low clouds move in overnight into parts of the central bay. sunshine inland during the day. the surf out on the coast, we don't have a high surf warning. no wave heights up to 10 or 15 feet. but what we have instead is a northwest swell mixing with this southerly swell which could make for challenging conditions, change up the rip currents and the patterns we typically see on our coastline. no moisture out of this system for now. but there's a stronger system, hurricane maria that by the end of next week could impact our weather in some days as we head towards next weekend. but right now, we have the classic summer pattern of the low c

. >>> try to bring in our meteorologist, rob mayeda. it sort of felt like fall. >> temperatures only int the upper 70s to 80. and right now we still have a strong sea breeze out there with some areas of low clouds being pushed inland, which may give us some light rain or drizzle through the morning. it's fairly interesting to note, close where the oakhurst is burning near yosemite, they've been seeing some light rain showers. that's the remnants of thundershowers that were flaring up in the central and southern sierra during the afternoon. we'll continue to see the threat, at least during the daylight hours of some thundershowers and more lightning strikes for part of the sierra over the next couple afternoons. what you'll wake up to a another blanket of low clouds. and the marine layer up to 2500 feet thick. that's going to be inland and during the afternoon we'll see the low clouds go back to the coastline and run back inland at this hour come tomorrow night. with the low clouds, there is a chance we'll see some drizzle or light rain.
