thanks to the good stewardship of mayer brown and others and the good stewardship of ed lee, it nevergoing to happen again. then, in around 1983, into my office what gordon swanson, then the head of the chamber of commerce, and rick, who suggested doing and historic trolley festival, and that historic trolleys festival was set to just operate during the tourist season from fisherman's wharf down to castro just for four months. the next year, 1984, was the democratic convention, it was easy for me to convince him to continue that that year. then, it was expanded to a five- year plan, and it existed for five years. well, it has been a few decades since then, and the historic trolley festival is still going on. [applause] now, i understand the route is going to be extended. one of the great things about this city is you have people who really do care, not a year in and year out, but decade after decade after decade. rick is one of those people, so you would do me a great honor if you would give him a big round of applause. [applause] >> i don't know what the equivalent is but i think i am more the taskmaster, safe driver. still ginsberg, the director of the park, thank you. we would not be here today without leadership and guidance of the port commission represented by kimberly brandon. the director of the office and workforce development, my duties include the interest and development, business attraction and retention, small business development, international trade and commerce and workforce development. when you listen to the job description, you understand why this is so important. this is not only a breathtaking spectator event that will mark us internationally, this touches on nearly every aspect of what we do to improve the economic climate of san francisco. the america's cup will help us nationally and internationally. it creates business opportunities and jobs. the contribution to the e

symphony hall, the restoration of the opera house, and, of course, the city hall, may gift -- helping mayer brownh that a bit -- helping mayor brown. it was said that the only thing that was not done when these buildings were built is the memorial for veterans because we ran out of money. have you all heard about that before? what happened is that writing in not on a carriage but on a charger was mike and wilkes little group because they came in leading the charge to raise the money for this memorial, so they are certainly to be commended. and then to go out and get their army of people for money and, most particularly [no audio] and by the way, happy birthday, steve. it is his birthday today. [applause] it is a great honor to know that that memorial that will be here and this horseshoe drive will put its arms around a wonderful memorial for veterans who i know that we respect so much and admire so much, and this is a long-awaited, and we are so happy to be part of it. so, may i present my veterans, my marine, my secretary, george shultz. i have found my place here and i have mentioned, i began my career here in 1996 with mayer brown. i realized then in my 20's that i needed to pursue higher education. and it helped the mayor said he would never give me a raise or promotion on till i went back to school. i enrolled in the university of san francisco law school. i got my j.d. and pass the bar. -- passed the gar. -- bar. [applause] san francisco has been my home. six years ago i was married here on the steps almost six years ago to this month. [applause] some are clapping, some are not. [laughter] it has been a fundamental time for my family and i having been nominated. by mayor ed lee and i am grateful to that community and i am grateful to the mayor and the board of supervisors who are considering this nomination. i vow to do the best job i possibly can for the city and i have -- as i have done from the outset of my city career. i will continue to draw inspiration and guidance from the black woman in our history and culture who have paved the way for me and others with their relentless fight against prejudice and i

unsafe conditions became apparent to mayer brown, and he remedied it. unfortunately, that has dwindled since then, due to lack of maintenance. the opposition seems to be out of touch with the realities of providing natural turf fields in our environment. for sports facilities, we need practical solutions. i am wondering if they will next the demand that the park tennis courts be converted to grass. this is a practical solution to the shortage of soccer fields in the city. this is a safe alternative. i support the project. thank you very much. president buell: we have a kid'' group. some folks have been waiting. if we can back up some of the teams together, and may be one speaker for all of the green team, that would be great. >> i am a new manager of the competitive team in san francisco, the nighthawks. it is very difficult to find playing fields as a team in san francisco. this project allows triple the amount of playing time. the lights provide very little effect beyond the area in which that are lighting. we believe that this project for youth and a

sure it is not only serving all of us, but that it welcomes in the new route we are creating that mayer brown worked so hard to get established. now, with the help of senator feinstein and the help of so many of our delegation and state representatives, we will start and finish that central subway that will also be the complement of the third street light rail. that will be another admission that we look forward to our transit system representing, to connect up eventually to what we have already started at the transbay terminal so that all of our muni transit system can connect up to the wonderful world of high-speed rail. that will be in our lifetime. not just a wish. we are taking steps to make sure that is a reality. that is our future. we cannot risk the inability to have our transit system connected up to all of our areas. and then, to help muni establish the bus rapid transit systems along geary, venice, that will be done in a very short time, and we got some help because today we announced the rebuild of our hospitals, and they are contributing to the rapid transit systems. senator, wi
