[applause] mayor lee: good afternoon. and welcome. welcome to the world series champion city and county of san francisco. i may not be much of a politician, but i certainly know how to trash talk. and i want you to know that that's how i introduce myself when i'm at the u.s. conference of mayors. i kind of say, hey, i'm ed lee, i'm the mayor of the world champion city of san francisco, what are you mayor of? i wanted to welcome all of you here to moscone center, our center of conventions and also to san francisco. and i hope you are enjoying the weather. as mayor of san francisco, i like to welcome you to our city. it's a small city that dares to dream big, bound only by our capacity to imagine. and i would also like to welcome you to the greenest city in north america. i'm so pleased that i'm able to welcome you here today and many of you know, i used to be the city's administrator before i became mayor. and as a result, i've seen things from both sides. as a long time public servant, and now as mayor. so i have a pretty

[applause] mayor lee: good morning. all right. it is great to be in the city of san francisco because we are doing everything right. i know they only gave me 10 minutes this morning. i could probably talk for hours about what we're doing in our city to make sure it is economically strong, but finally have 10 minutes, it is going to be about jobs, jobs, and more jobs. [applause] that is what we have to do in this city. i want to speak on the state of our city's economic climate. in order to have a city that is, as you have heard me say time and time again, that is safe, solvent, and successful, we need to invest in our residents, in our businesses here, and in our city. that is why jobs and our business climate are the top party is that my administration will continue to push very hard. that means creating and retaining jobs and creating the conditions for businesses to start and grow and prosper in our great city. today, san francisco's unemployment rate is 9%. while that is the third lowest in the whole state, we can still do bet

i would also like to thank and acknowledge our mayor, mayor ed lee, who is here with us today. since mayor lee's early days in city hall, he has been a strong supporter of the transbay project and everything that the transbay represents. housing, improve air quality, the alleviation of congestion, and a better quality of life for all bay area san franciscans. i would also like to add that since coming into office, we have created over 1000 jobs for this project. so, thank you, mr. lee. in addition, i want to thank our border directors. jane kim is here today. you will be hearing from her. i do not know if mayer brown is here, but it is important to it knowledge him. after all, he started the project many years ago. you will be hearing more about that in a moment. it will include thousands of new residential units, parks, open space, shops, retail, restaurant, and so forth. you will be hearing a lot about that from the mayor and jane. in addition, the men and women working on our construction site. you can see some of them here today. they are very dedicated and have been working

all of this and has been leading this great city very well for the last seven months or so, our mayor, ed lee. [applause] mayor lee: thank you, ed. thank you, public works. as you know, i used to head the agency. thank you. you have been helping keep our city clean and keep the projects going and keep the employment that is so vital to the city up and keep the projects going to full completion, whether it is generally hospital or the library programs. i also want to think -- i also want to thank supervisor cohen. this is about promises we have heard from many, many years. and i want to thank her for being aggressive on this, because these are old promises that our city has made to communities like the bayview for many, many years. it takes new talent to keep those fulfilled. so, her office, with the mta getting their funding, and the department of the nine men -- putting all this funding together to work on the corridors program and to work with redevelopment and work force development to make sure we are there as well. these programs combine to hire san francisco residents, to use a very val

an attack ad against front- runner mayor ed lee. the ad was put out by rival candidates state senator leland yee and basically accuses the mayor of renegging on his promise not to seek a full term. the reason? so-called power brokers line chinatown activists rose pack talked him into changing his mind. >> my good friend rose pack. we have done. >> reporter: the mayor's synonymous. >> negative campaigning like that is another example of why i wanted to run for mayor in the first place. it does nothing to suggest how we create jobs or improve our economy or make the city safer. >> reporter: yee however is sticking to his guns. >> he is just beholden to the power brokers and i'm not. >> reporter: to drive the point home, yee is going to send out 75,000 door hangers like this all over the city claiming that unlike his rival, he keeps his promises. and they are saying it both in english and chinese. yee isn't the only one ak tag the mayor. candidate jeff adachi is sending out mailers accusing ed lee of cutting a back room deal with city w

government worked out the kinks, twists and turns, bombs in the road, to select its new interim mayor, ed lee. san francisco's first asian- american mayor. >> this has been an unprecedented and historic transition of power here in san francisco. i am so happy the board of supervisors came together to select an outstanding choice along many outstanding candidates to lead us over the next several years. >> over the past several months when this issue has come up, it had been agonizing. the board has been put into a difficult situation. there are a lot of differences of opinion on how to run the city, how to mass make a decision, who should be in place, 11 people to agree on that is a challenging thing. i think we have done the best we can do in the process, considering the difference of opinions. >> the people of san francisco can now choose their mayor, the direction they want to go. that is why this decision was so appropriate. >> the other big shock is that the moderates seem to have won this round. people thought, progressives have themselves on the board. there is no reason that they will

ed lee. so the mayor had to decide whether or not to fund this project, so i am glad that he did. we had support and additional financial support from the people that run the organization. jon dugan as well. you can see that great historic pedestrian lighting, which we only have on taylor street and a small part of golden gate. i did not know this, but when he was a cao, ed lee got those installed on taylor street. the mayor also has a plan that would restore 135 historic street lights to the tenderloin. that is an incredibly important thing for them, from an aesthetic and from a safety point of view. we are also one of the darkest neighborhoods. this is important. you can see how nice those are. imagine how nice they would look through the neighborhood. i also want to introduce leroy looper who goes back to the 1980's with us in the tenderloin. nothing that any of us are doing would have started without leroy's vision when he bought the cadillac. we always need to appreciate them for their contributions. so without further ado, i want to make -- introduced a person who made this

. >> a few minutes ago, city administrator now interim mayor ed lee, emerged happy but humble. >> in 2011, a temporary or interim mayor was selected by the board of supervisors, what is an interim mayor? why do we need one? is it the mayor's supposed to be elected by san francisco voters? how did this happen? let's rewind the story a little and look at the people and complicated process that led to this historic transition. the last time san francisco had an interim mayor was 30 years ago, when, in 1978, george mosconi, was assassinated by supervisor dan white. >> both to grow rather mosconi and harvey milk have been shot and killed. >> they needed a new mayor at the time. the board got together and appointed dianne feinstein. >> we did not have much to go on and looked at 1978. there were no hints as to who put it on the board, if any discussion occurred about a process. >> what triggered san francisco's search over 30 years later was gavin newsom's election to the office of lieutenant governor. >> i put myself up as a candidate for the tenant governor, won, thanks to the overwhelmin
