thank you, mayor lee, for increasing the size of the lgbt caucus by 50% of the board. aughter] with that said, mayor ed lee. >> thank you. good morning, everyone. we have a very serious challenge for us. as i had said in not only the speech that i gave on that sunday, but i have been talking with members of the board, and i really want to thank supervisor wiener and supervisor campos and supervisor olague for joining me today for this announcement. i said earlier through the year that i always have to watch out for what is not occurring, but that the state level and at the federal level. one of those challenges has been fiscal. we're not hearing very good news. one of those news items that i was fearful of was lynnette supercommittee that congress created to try to come together and make an agreement with all the different parties, cells in their objectives, our cities across the country were hurt by that. one of those programs that we value so much that our leader pelosi has been at such a stalwart leader in in helping our city is our aids funding. i want to take this

here today, but she did ask me to come to share some words and to express her data gratitude to mayor ed lee for his continued and outstanding leadership and continued commitment in the fight against hiv and aids. and also to supervisors winner, campos, and olague for all the work they're doing, the mayor is fantastic that, director of public health, thank you. thank you. she also wanted me to express her deep gratitude to all of the members of the community of hiv/aids service providers, some of whom are represented today, some we have lost in the last few years, but for their ongoing commitment in the fight against hiv/aids. here is leader pelosi's statement. "the fight against hiv/aids and for those fighting against this terrible disease has been one of my top legislative priorities for the of 25 years. san francisco was hit early and hit hard by the devastation of hiv/aids, but san franciscans responded by developing a model of care that became the model for the ryan white care act. our city shows that, bourbons of hiv/aids work saves lives by keeping people healthy and productive. today

[applause] >> ok, so i have been working with the department of public works for over 11 years. when i took this job, i work with mayor ed lee. someone who has mentored me, guided me, given the advice, and, frankly, been able to get to where i am is the next person i am going to introduce. they are partner in this, and have done a lot of work with dpw. i have had the opportunity to travel to other countries to see how public works and how cities are being kept clean and green. welcome. [applause] >> well, i am not very good at clapping hands. i am very good at kicking behind, and to get things done. you know, the thing about mohammed and our mayor and our leadership in our city right now is that they are willing to listen. i have always advocated that the community comes together when that there is a good idea. when there is a bad idea, i am the first one -- i do not care who you are, i will object to it. this idea of displaying the sidewalk, as th

mayor lee is right. we go way back. we have known each other for 37 years. the mayor is only about 48. [laughter] we do have a lot in common. maybe that is why i was chosen to come after the mayor. they say two heads are better than one. we're both in dragons. we're both water dragons. this is the year of the water dragon, every 12 years. you can kind of gas how old the mayor is. [laughter] if you subtract 24 from that, you will get my age. [laughter] not only do we share the name ed, we have parents coming from the same part of china. we went to the same law school. we share the same address for a brief period of time. we worked in many of these same agencies. we both have beautiful wives who have been very supportive, a great kids, and both of us are really good looking. [laughter] for those of you who have some doubt about the chinese zodiac and horoscope system, let me read you this description of the water dragon to see how well it fits the mayor and me. the water element focuses on other's well-being rather than their own. they are often more diplomatic

to the people of district 5, mayor lee and i share the same standard, that every decision i make will be what i believe are in the best interests of my constituents and the people of san francisco. i think you all know that i am is following in the footsteps of great supervisors who have represented district 5, starting with harvey milk, harry brit, matt gonzales, and ross mirkarimi. matt, i know that you're here today, and i want to thank you for your counsel and for being present and for being supportive of me today. [applause] nauert it is time -- now it is time to step up. it is might turn out to represent. it is an enormous challenge and responsibility, and i realize that. but one that i embrace, and i will work my hardest to, you know, to really meet with everyone, to understand what the concerns are. you know, it will be a lot of work, and we will hit the ground running, probably in about five minutes. [laughter] anyway, i did want to acknowledge my background. appointments usually do not happen to people like me. i grew up working class, poor. i grew up in the farm labor camp

mayor lee is the first asian- american mayor in the city's history. 2010, mayor lee was appointed to a second term by mayor newsom. his appointment at the time was confirmed unanimously by the board of supervisors. as city administrator, he spearheaded reform that would be reduced the size and cost of government, from reducing the vehicle fleet, to consolidating departments, to saving tax dollars. he implemented the city's move to cleaner vehicles and infrastructure to support electric vehicles. mayor lee also developed and oversaw implementation of his first 10-year capital plan, to guide our capital and infrastructure investment. mayor lee has a long and distinguished career in san francisco. since 1989, has held a number of senior leadership positions. he is a fellow cal graduate. as you probably all know, last tuesday, november 8, the people of san francisco elected edwin lee in his own right, to serve as mayor of san francisco. let me say, on a personal note, the day before the election, i was having coffee at my favorite cafe in glen park, and lost in my e-mail, whatever i was d

mayor lee 23. there's a couple that are up in the office area, the fibrogen building that are probably -- i'm counting that he wasn't. there have been 35 total over time. some have gotten bigger and moved into larger quarters. some have venture owners that want them out of the city of san francisco and down the peninsula. some had to downsize. couldn't raise more money. so the picture has been one that's very dynamic. we would expect about 50% growth year over year. in the number of companies. internally, i would guess that a third of the companies would grow in the space they have inside the building. so it's burgeoning. it's not just doing ok or getting by. it's a place where we reached an equilibrium. it's a turnover and a huge amount of demand out there for the resource. i would also like to mention some fibrogen people. i've had to make a list. pardon me. jenny kosor. rod ferman. rod stanley. katherine sharp. all people that work on this project every day all the time. the part i can attest to

mayor. it was not easy to get ed lee to run for mayor. warren hellman and myself, and i know dianne feinstein and mayer brown as well, helped convince the end lead to run. it is one of the best meetings that warren and i have had, when we sat in his office for one hour, and we felt like we meant some headway, and we must have, because he is here. it is not a coincidence -- it is a coincidence, that the tech community it is following the example that warren hellman has set for this community. warren hellman and i were very close friends, and i think upstairs right now, he has a huge smile on his face. he cared as much about san francisco as any of us. he loved the tech community. a majority of his investments were in tech. he really gets what we are trying to do, and we should advance his cause of civic engagement. after ed decided to run, the tech community rallied around him. in an effort today, not to lose any of them momentum, we are forming this organization called sf citi. we do not want to lose the momentum for the tech agenda in sa

mayor lee: does anybody have any questions? i really want to credit the board of supervisors who, in particular supervisor wiener, who helped lead the board to establish -- they immediately signed off on the good samaritan ordinance. we just did not believe that as a good piece of legislation, we have started implementing it. to the credit of the board, it is an honor to harold and -- to what harold and then have been doing for so many years. the best way to honor your work is to get you more partners. we went on a road show already and we started. supervisor wiener h and i can hear.s.a. representatives and we made our first and pitched to the san francisco parks association to gain more membership into the good samaritan ordinance to create a longer list and help them come in and with more resources in case we have more displaced persons. this is where we are going to go with pitches for persons with disabilities, getting more harm is listed up and the access for all the property owners in the city, we have treasure island als

[applause] mayor lee: let's see if everybody can occupy the parking space. exactly what we want to do is make sure people use the sidewalks as much as possible. first of all, how the new year, everyone. i know that as we celebrate the traditional new year, as soon as i finish with one new year, i get ready for the next year, because chinese new year is also a huge celebration not over chat -- not only over chinatown, but all over the city. the city really makes a lot of money with a lot of tourists that come in. the department of public works has already started -- you are already cleaning up the big gate down there and the graffiti. one of the things that is part of the tradition -- and it is already happening in my own house -- as i have to clean up my hard, clean my kitchen, my bedroom, my living room before chinese new year comes. that is the same thing with literally every chinese family, every chinese-owned business, but also beyond that, i think this culture is spreading that a lot of non-asian families are doing the same thing. whether it is our frie
