i would like to say thanks to mayor lee. we also -- always believed san francisco is an important port and trade and cultural center in the western part of the united states. it has a long history of business and cultural exchange with china. as i come to san francisco this time, i have some new feelings. i have been to san francisco many times but no time like this time that makes me more convinced that both sides share a stronger desire for corp. and no time like this time that i sense -- for cooperation. there are nmany opportunities in front of us, especially in the field of infrastructure. as i said this time, i have a delegation of 100 people coming from 40 companies. many of them in fact specialize in infrastructure field. the closely followed -- they have been closely following the projects in city developments, in airports and seaports renovations, and real-estate, and high-speed railways. some have already had the experience in engineering design, construction, and management in the united states. so i hope that yo

i really want to welcome the san francisco mayor ed lee. it is difficult for me to call him mayor lee because i have always known him as ed. you are going to get to know him really well. the 43rd mayor of san francisco was born in seattle, went to college in maine, this tiny college out there. he decided to come back and get his law degree from uc-berkeley, and then was appointed by art agnos in government in 1979. he became the director of the human rights commission under willie brown. he became the director of public works. 2005 city administrator, and then the fateful day in january 2011 when the board of supervisors could not decide on anybody and decided that family was not going to be a threat to their future political aspirations. [laughter] he got more than six votes, six more than anyone else. and he became the interim mayor. he did an amazing job. he is outspoken, both feet on the ground, a person you can trust, a person who is very honest, and based upon his experience, knows how to get the job done. i believe he is the best pla

mayor. edwin m. lee was sworn in on january 8, 2012 as the 43rd mayor of the city and county of san francisco. ed lee is the first asian- american mayor in san francisco history. [applause] mayor lee was elected on november 8, 2011 by the people of san francisco while he was serving as interim mayor. appointed unanimously as successor mayor by the board of supervisors on january 11, 2011. while serving as interim mayor, mayor lee championed balancing the budget to keep san francisco safe, solvent, and successful. reforming city pensions, economic developments, a job creation, and public safety as his top priorities. mayor lee has worked hard to keep the economy and economic recovery on track, create jobs for residents, and everything that supports a thriving economic climate like parks, transit, housing, quality of life in the neighborhoods, and public safety. mayor lee's focused on job creation, taking responsibility for building san francisco's future. for helping each other and that government more ef

mayor lee: thank you for that important question. i share with you a deep concern for the violence occurring. i want you to know that that is probably the issue that keeps me up most nights. everytime i get a message on my phone about another homicide, that is minutes lost. i think about the life that is lost their. it just so happens that it has been in ordinate. despite -- this spike is simply not acceptable. violence in this city is not tolerable under any circumstances. i want you to know that my administration takes this very seriously, supervisor. i am trying to find new solutions to put an end to down violence in the city. thank you for taking this issue on. i find that i need more partners in making sure the city is safer. i want to understand -- _ your acknowledgement, the public safety can best be achieved through collaboration between agencies, departments, and communities working together. i also share your leave the community development efforts have an important role to play. but i want to refer back to an answer that i

a question for mayor lee. i wanted to ask him if he felt extending parking meter hours, increasing parking meters, adding parking on sundays, increasing traffic tickets is going to help create jobs in san francisco for small businesses? >> wow, you really waited a long time for that one, huh, george? i have had several discussions with the mta. some years ago, and a little bit on you, the voters made sure that we did not mess around with mta's budget. at least take things out and put things in in the way it did in years past. the board has to vote up or down on the whole budget. having said that, we did talk a little bed about, you know, our general resistance to putting meters on sundays. it is $2.5 million revenue source for them. they believe that times have changed where there are a lot of tourists and visitors that come in too many of our sections throughout the city on its sundays to enjoy, of course, all the things that we have. so we believe that revenue they need to have to balance their deficits. we

and thank you mayor lee for being out here. i wanted to bring the perspective of the district supervisor. here, as you know for ocean beach, much of ocean beaches the backyard of the sunset district. for many of my residence, you cross the street and there you are it ocean beach. for us, what have bishop -- happens at ocean beach is very much a part of what happens to our own homes and neighborhoods. my interest first started to get peeved because of all the issues we had here. not only the erosion issues, but if you drive along the highway, the road closures that happens, among other things. as a city leader, one of the things we started to recognize is that the real erosion issues were starting to threaten a things like our server infrastructure, among other critical pieces of san francisco's in for a stretcher. so it became pressing for us to pull together a collaboration of individuals to be here. i wanted to speak about how thrilled i am that is a master plan has been completed. we have a long and a vicious road ahead of u

i also want to thank mayor lee and borrow a bit of a moniker that has been applied to him. he gets it done. what better example than what we are seeing today. thank you, mayor, for making that a reality. [applause] those of us who knew jimmy herman new habra -- know how proud he would have been to see this. he was one of the people that embody the best of san francisco, bringing people together and making sure that we do things as well as possible, that we create jobs can bring people along as we move forward. this is such a fitting tribute to a man that embodied those goals for all of us. you have heard about all the wonderful things here taking place. job creation, we have exceeded goals in terms of local participation. another thing that is near and dear to me is creating a sustainable and green structure. we have done that here with our cruise terminal. it will be the most green cruise terminal, i think, in the world. we recycle the gray water, energy efficiency. i am not sure what kind of leed certification we are going to get, but it is a model of public buildings that

ladies and gentlemen, san francisco mayor, ed lee. [applause] mayor lee: thank you. good morning, everybody. welcome. it is great to be reunited with my long-lost brothers, separated at birth. david lee, his younger brother.

in particular, president chiu and supervisor avalos and mayor lee. i want to thank the controller who has spent a lot of time with his staff. i think is a positive thing whenever the city elected family to use the term that mayor lee uses from time to time, comes together. as i indicated in the prior item involving affordable housing trust fund, i certainly do not want to be in a position where we let the perfect be the enemy of the dead. but i do believe that we have to ask certain questions whenever a proposal of this magnitude comes forward. this is probably one of the most important votes will have. as a board of supervisors. there are a couple of questions that raise questions for me. in terms of process, it is a good idea any time a vote of this magnitude takes placethis o that we have of awful and in- depth analysis by the budget and legislative analysts. i think that we have always benefited from this separate, additional review. my understanding is that there is not an analysis by the budget -- and i know that we will not be voting on this t

mayor lee is the get along mayor when he was appointed last year and when gavin newsom. he went and proposed the idea that blew people out of the water. he said san francisco, because of the high violence in the african-american community, where there has been a lot of gun violence, maybe we should look in san francisco at what new york is doing with the very controversial stop-and-frisk policy. right away, his police chief who lee hired said i don't think we want to do that here. there is a lot of racial profiling. he said, mayor, i don't think we want to do that here. he said if he goes forward with the policy, it will not be based on racial profiling. he said we have to do something about the violence problem. there have been community petitions to try to stop it. he has the political pressure from the board. >> can he really say it is not going to be racial profiling? is he speaking for every police officer? >> a politician can say everything. it matters how does the police department carry this out? the policy has been under fire in new york city, but other places w
