in six months, i was moved into an sro, mcallister hotel. i have been there three years. now my agenda is to basically get families that are currently living in and sro moved into permanent housing, to get single adults that have been stuck there by no fault of their own, but because of the way the system works, moved out into permanent housing. one of my other goals is to make sure that enforcement takes place, whether it be fire codes, emergency response, a tenant rights. there has been bouncing from room to rooms that happens in sro's that are not funded by the city, where tenants do not have rights. as an advocate, these would be the things of a strategy is with the city to improve. i think it is a travesty that children grow up in sro's. a month to share a real experience with you. thank you. i want to share a real experience with you before i finish. when i moved into this sro, there was a little boy, three years old. i watched him learn to ride a bicycle in the hallway of an sro, from a tricycle to the training wheels to having them taken off. he is going to be six

joining me now to talk about this, republican strategist lenny mcallister in chicago, and democraticist maria cardona, our favorites here on cnn saturday morning. let's start, as we always do, the political highlight of the week for you, maria, what was it? >> obama urges congress to just do it. republicans continue to just say no. >> all right. lenny, what was your highlight of the week? >> no pst, partisanship, no jbs, job creation from this white house. >> always got to stop and figure yours out. lenny, let me start with you this time around. was this the president getting tough on these budget talks or was this setting up something for later. was this part of the 2012 campaign? >> this is part of the 2012 campaign. let me explain my headline. it's obviously supposed to be post partisanship and job creation, but there's no "o" in either of this. any time he's been brought into the room to bring the parties together, he's more inclined to use the bully pulpit to beat up the republicans than to get both sides to come to the middle and do something that will benefit america inclusive

i talked to a democratic strategist, maria cardona, as well as republican strategist, lenny mcallister, a little earlier about what affect the tea party may be having on this whole debate. do you see that the tea party, in your opinion, is not giving at all, and that's the holdup? >> there are some that are not giving. i'm not going to say everybody in that caucus, but there are definitely some that have been inflexible. the bottom line is, we didn't get here overnight and we're going to have to progress our way past and through this. there were some that said that the republicans had a big win, they should have taken advantage of it this time last week and got us past this crisis. >> well, maria, that some he may speak of, some could be one, two, three, four, or five, but those some seem pretty powerful right now. >> well, that's exactly the point, t.j. and i wrote a piece on cnn.com about this, it's called the tyranny of 87. which is, when you put that much power in the hands of a very small group of people, especially people who have never governed before, have no interest in compro
