terry mcauliffe the winner.e is, you see the projection that we just made with 96% of the votes now, in he's up by 17,120. 47% to 46%. only 4% of the vote yet to be counted. john, how did he do it? >> he did it by winning where the people are. if you look at the map, see all this red think ken cucinnelli had to win. but he can thank the people will in the suburbs of northern virginia. that's loudon county. prince william county, to the south of d.c. about 70% of the vote counted, 11-point margin there. bigger margin for terry mcauliffe there. and in fairfax county closer to washington, d.c., 21point gap. 91%. this is an hour ago or so terry mcauliffe was trailing, when the votes came in they provided the margin of difference. why was this such a close wrestling match? the exit polls are fascinating. these will be studied looking ahead to 2014 and 2016, because this state is now such a bellwether state in presidential politics. ken cucinnelli, 53% of the voters in virginia oppose obama care. look at that. 80% of

yet it looks like mcauliffe is going to win comfortably. yet the white men say we're going for cuccinelli who's gotten some of the worst press, he's made one bad day after another. now look at this. white women. we've been saying around this table that the white women -- all women i should say. across the state of virginia are very pro-choice and inclined to give a big number to mcauliffe. 48 to 43 white women went. it's so different than the way white men vote in their own households. >> i would divide it, chris, between northern virginia which as i said is part of metropolitan washington at this point. from richmond north, it's a mixed swing state. and rural southern virginia which is where i think it's fair to say the split by gender is still much more. >> if you look at the numbers of, say, black men and women. black women, 95 to 5 for mcauliffe over cuccinelli. >> obviously if you're a minority in this country we know you have other issues besides gender driving your vote. >> exactly. but after the last election, the gop did an interna

so the mcauliffe victory poises, and perhaps mcauliffe could play a role in the clinton campaign in 2016ere are a lot of clinton operatives who are here tonight. they are very excited to know they have one more notch in mcauliffe's vote, and in clinton's. >> and taking the stage behind you, he will take the speech. it is interesting to note that virginia has elected a governor from the opposing party of the party that holds the white house. they've done that since 1977. so this mcauliffe victory tonight breaks that trend. and it is also the first time since the 1880s that a party has secured a single four-term before turning over the mansion keys to its opponent. there you see mcauliffe's family getting ready for this victory speech. carl, just a little bit about terry mcauliffe. interesting past, former national democratic chairman. "life's a party" was his book, had some skeletons that some worried would come out in his campaign. and frankly he was a vulnerable candidate at times but managed to pull off a win. as you look at the numbers, 98% reporting, 1.4% separate mcauliffe and ken c

the latino vote we know 66-29 toe mcauliffe. the asian vote went to mcauliffe. >> absolutely. what we found, particularly for the latino voters, the immigration issue was the deciding issue for them and you have two candidates with very different opinions on immigration. you have the republican candidate along the anti-immigrant wing of the party using hostile rhetoric that turned off the latino voters. that's becoming a litmus test for candidate. if they cannot get past the immigration issue they can't get past the issues that might resonate with latino voters. asian voters are being turned off by this as well and there is other data, college-educated whites are turn odd by this. this may be winning issues in the state of virginia six or seven cycles ago, but many peel they're there to solve problems . >> obamacare, ken cuccinelli pounded away at this thing, has to be something real sobering. he seemed to get traction. this is not a popular piece of legislation. >> not clear. the polling shows that people are split, and many who can't stomach him voted in support of obamacare

in the end mcauliffe will be the next governor of virginia. in new jersey a big re-election win for the republican incumbent governor chris christie. his acceptance speech tonight possibly a warmup for a 2016 presidential bid. in the end a crushing win over barbara buono. 60% for chris christie, 38% for her. an impressive win for chris christie. in new york city, bill deblasio will become the first democratic mayor, get this, in two decades, taking over for the republican turned independent michael bloomberg. bill deblasio will be the next mayor of new york. so lots of excitement. lots of political activity and lots to think about in the days, weeks and months ahead. piers? >> wolf, this defeat of the tea party man, ken cucinnelli, how significant is that in terms of the tea party's prospects going forward to 2014 and then 2016? >> i can't tell you how many establishment republicans have said to me in recent weeks they thought terry mcauliffe was a flawed democratic candidate for governor of virginia, but they knew this tea party-backed ken cu

mcauliffe had a stronger coalition of his own. he won big among african-americans, we saw that by 82 points. he carried moderates by 22 points as well as people with post college graduate degrees and unmarried men and women, both. they call it the rising american electorate. another reporter dubbed it the coalition of the ascendant. they are changing the game in purple states like virginia. how long can they rely on their base of mainly older white men. kathleen, i think i'm in the category i just mentioned as disappearing as having any political significance. so i have to be a little careful here and step lightly, but it does seem to me if you look at some of the numbers, for example, the margin of terry mcauliffe's victory could be made up of his margin among african-american men, right there was an explanation for it. what do you see it when you look through it? >> i love that term the coalition of the ascendant. i do wonder how much virginia really tells us about political trends and about the republican/democratic positions.

they broke heavily for terry mcauliffe. a lot of the advertising in the end targeting women voters in the northern virginia suburbs. that's what made the difference. northern virginia suburbs. 60% of virginia voters more moderate electorate today say abortion should be legal. a lot of advertising and direct mail. 60% of those voters breaking for mcauliffe. democrats will say they pushed ken cucinnelli out of the mainstream in virginia. chris christie will wake up in the morning and say i am the new national republican model. he won among women, he won among men. if you look over here he improved his standing. even though he lost african-americans he split the latino vote. look at that. chris christie is going to make the point look what happened to john mccain and mitt romney. i can be competitive in those swing states where latino voters matter. would he make a good president? the people of new jersey think yes. not by a huge margin but yes. but anderson, as we kick forward into chris christie 2016, the voters of new jerse

he wins by three, mcauliffe does. is this a negative nationally for democrats as we look upon this stuff? >> this was a scratch and claw to the finish. we weren't expecting for this to seem to be a nail biter, which it was last night as the votes were being counted. think about how horrible it would have been for the clintons had mcauliffe not pulled this out, especially considering the government shutdown, the negatives that cuccinelli faced. hillary clinton was out there for mcauliffe. did her first campaign event in years for him. bill clinton did a bus tour throughout the state, still this was only as far as he was able to get. some of that is how terry mcauliffe's own image in virginia, in a lot of ways this race was a race to the bottom. it was a race to see who could make voters more afraid of the alternative. >> it could have been a missed opportunity for some conservative groups who bailed on cuccinelli. christie got the 60% that people thought he needed. is this a resounding enough win to make a national sta

"the ed show" team was on the ground in virginia this weekend, ahead of one of the most important governor races in the past decade. president obama joined hundreds of terry mcauliffe supporters at washington lee high school in arlingt arlington, virginia sunday. we were there. we asked the voters, what were the issues motivating them tomorrow. supporters had this to say. >> looking out for his future and want to make sure that it's a society we want him to grow up in. >> i would have been much less motivated, had it not been for the government shutdown and the tea party trying to push everybody around. >> she told me, get up, got to get out here, cast our vote. >> remember, voter i.d. laws are changing next year. a lot of people don't know what's going on with the voter i.d. laws. >> this tea party disruption in government is not g

if terry mcauliffe, if the polls are right and terry mcauliffe wins this thing, what do you think that says about national politics? what message can we take nationally from a democrat winning in virginia under these circumstances? >> i think it says a lot. virginia, first of all, is a very competitive state. we don't like extremism. from the right or the left. and we like our politics pretty much in the center. the republicans nominated one of the most extreme tickets in the history of the commonwealth of virginia. and by way of contrast, the democrats have nominated three generally pragmatic people. and i think added to that, there was so many issues, ken cuccinelli and mark obenshain are identified with in terms of the war on women, the famous transvaginal probe legislation, even opposing things like bipartisan transportation legislation. they went into this fall with a deficit, and then occurred the shutdown. and the shutdown has really turned off virginia voters. they see that as a dysfunctional congress, they see it as an example of that extremism. they don't like it. many of us
