president biden is apparently going to stump for terry mcauliffe.em for mcauliffe, because biden's collapsing popularity is part of the reason why the virginia governor's race has become a kind of referendum on the first nine months of joe biden's time in office, and it's not going well. and glenn youngkin looks like he might win a state that has been trending very sharply blue for, you know, over the past decade. what we're watching at the moment, jon, is something really extraordinary. we're watching the perception shift about which party is on the side of the little guy. and you heard very clearly in president obama's speech there he was mocking glenn youngkin because he's been a former ceo, and he head a joke about glenn youngkin, you know, not being the kind of guy who did the dishes, not doing the grocery shopping. but all over virginia there are ordinary people who are really cross about their children being brainwashed in schools and the perception is changing. ordinary people are thinking, wait a minute, the democrats don't represent me any

terry mcauliffe does not have that advantage. host: what does each candidate have to do to win in virginia? where are the strengths that have to turn out both on election day and ahead of election day in early voting? guest: well, i will give you a general comment and then we can get to the specifics. we want to get questions. but, generally speaking, there are sibling more immigrants in the new virginia than republicans. a lot more. that was not true even 10 or 15 years ago. the state has been changing significantly in demographic terms and in regional terms. the most democratic region of the state's northern virginia. northern virginia, depending on how you define the region, is about one third of the entire statewide vote now. so they turn out. back in the old days, and i have seen virginia since the early 50's, virginia was democratic. but, very conservative if democratic. -- very conservative democratic. southern democratic. it switched to republican in the 1970's getting with governor lyndon holden who was elected in 1979,

and that really quickly turned into an ad for the mcauliffe campaign.trump has not been in virginia physically, he has certainly been a rhetorical device that mcauliffe has used and all democrats here have tried to turn youngkin into mcauliffe. mcauliffe told me way before the primary was over that he would pay for the jet fuel to get trump to virginia because it was so important that he's able to tie youngkin to trump who lost this commonwealth by ten points. now trump is not planning on coming. a number of top democrats are. youngkin has used that as a way to attack mcauliffe saying that he is the candidate, he doesn't need to stump in this state for him, and that mcauliffe is trying to turn this ways into anything about himself. but it remains to be said that trump is unpopular here. he lost the commonwealth by about ten points in 2020. and i guarantee you're going to hear democrats behind me tying youngkin to trump even if there are no plans for trump to come to this state. >> uh-huh. and so dan, i hear the crowd behind you, they're getting a little

of course, mcauliffe is the former dnc chair. obama, and on tuesday president joe biden will be making a stop in northern virginia. you're seeing that on the democratic side but not the republican side. glenn youngkin is really keeping it at arm's length to some of these national figures, especially campaigning alongside of them. as the old saying goes, kendis, all politics is local. what is and is not working is at capitol hill. it matters to democrats up and down the ticket across the country. and that's what voters really care about, so that's going to really impact them. it's important to see what forter president barack obama is going to be doing for terry mcauliffe here. he released an ad for himmer earlier this week. he said yerkes, it's about the governor, but also what's ahead in the country. he knows it's a lot more than the governorship. he says, i know terry. that's a personal relationship. that worked when he said i know joe in the election and he hopes that works today. >> the race is way too close for many democrat
