director james comey, mccabe defended him as man of integrity who mccabe said enjoyed broad support in the f.b.i. to this day. that's important because it directly counters what the white house has said. they said that comey was undermining morale at the agency. minutes after mccabe said that, the senate intelligence chairman, republican richard burr, came out and also defended comey. that became a theme, judy. i spoke to several republican senators who today felt they had to defend comey's reputation against attacks from the white house. meanwhile, as politicians were doing that, one democratic senator on the intelligence committee came out and said she thinks jeff greenfield -- jeff sessions should resign over his role in the comey firing. now, all of this, what does it mean? basically, judy, i saw the dial move away from the president's position for both republicans and democrats today. >> woodruff: meantime, john, from the white house, the time line on exactly what happened seemed to be shifting, and the explanation seemed to be shifting a little bit. >> it didn't just seem to shif

acting fbi director andrew mccabe testifying before congress on u.s.curity and sitting in for his boss who was on the witness list. here is republican north chuck grassley of iowa. he is the chairman of the senate judiciary committee. senator, thank you so much for joining us. we know that andrew mccabe is being considered as comey's possible replacement. what are your thoughts on that? >> i have raised questions about whether or not he is independent enough to be involved in some of the negotiations that are going on because of political conflict. because of his wife getting, i think close to $700,000 from mcauliffe who was veries close to the clintons. and being involved in these negotiations. i asked for judgment about the independence. i didn't really get a very good answer except he came back and said there was no conflict of interest. that does not satisfy me. melissa: of course there are reports that former fbi director james comey was asking for more resources to more deeply investigate the russian hacking. that is why he was fired. what do you

remember back in 2015, andrew mccabe's wife, jill mccabe ran for a state senate seat in virginia and in the process got $700,000 from virginia democrat democrats. including the governor, terry mcauliffe. long-standing ties to hillary clinton. what bothered the foot soldiers that i know in the bureau is that they felt it was clearly a conflict or at least had the appearance of a conflict. because mccabe was providing resources to the email investigation but not directing it. the fbi concluded it was not a conflict and it was okay because mccabe had a more directing role in the investigation after his wife had lost her state senate race. they said to me, this shows that there was -- the culture was kind of broken. the leadership is not good. there seem to be special rules for director comey and that senior circle of leadership. that did not go down very well. >> i have a question about what is to come next. director -- or former director fbi comey was supposed to testify on thursday on capitol hill. can he voluntarily do that? what are his plans for that and a broader picture, the fbi

reporter: are you confident that mccabe is ready? reporter: are you confident they can lead the investigations? >> i don't think that is up for us to make. if the president does not feel he is, a change would be made. reason, it was determined he could not carry out his job, he would make a decision. we do not have the luxury of picking who we work with. we work with who is put in the roles, and work to best accommodate the needs. this is the investigation. one last question. president just told lester holt that he was going to fire director comey whether or not he had that recommendation or not, and he called her actor comey a grand stander. do you agree with that assessment? >> i will not speak for senator warren. statement. i found him to be one of the most ethical, a break, straightforward individuals i have had the opportunity to work with. our community more access to information than any director of the fbi. there were employees who disagreed with how he handled the clinton in gmail announcements and his interaction with the a

remember back in 2015, andrew mccabe's wife, jill mccabe ran for a state senate seat in virginia and in the process got $700,000 from virginia democrats. including the governor, terry mcauliffe.e. long-standing ties to hillary clinton. what bothered the foot soldiers that i know in the bureau is that they felt it was clearly a conflict or at least had the appearance of a conflict. because mccabe was providing resources to the email investigation but not directing it. the fbi concluded it was not a conflict and it was okay because mccabe had a more directing role in the investigation after his wife had lost her state senate race. they said to me, this shows that there was -- the culture was kind of broken. the leadership is not good. there seem to be special rules for director comey and that senior circle of leadership. that did not go down very well. >> i have a question about what is to come next. director -- or former director fbi comey was supposed to testify on thursday onme capitol hill. can he voluntarily do that? what are his plans for that andd a broader picture, the fbi has
