senator mccall you just heard that report from drew griffin.'m trying to figure out exactly where to start with you on this. let's start i guess with this issue. how is it that the navy to begin with could give this person secret clearance, security clearance, when he had been arrested for gun violence in the three years prior to that time? how could that happen? is that acceptable in any situation? >> i don't think it is. i think your prior piece illustrates all the problems that we're finding with these clearances and who we're issuing them. to remember, alexis had three arrests, one prior to his clearance where he had anger fuelled blackouts according to the police report, and yet that was never picked up on. then we know that he had a v.a. mental health issues. there was also a phone call to the newport police department where he said he was hearing voices. this is really not that long ago. hearing voices and thought that people were following him around. my understanding that that was reported to the newport military base. i don't know wha

stay with us. >> leslie mccall take away the politics, the noise if you will. what do you think is the real pulse of americans in the economy? >> yes, i think that's sort of the question that is going back to this issue of short term versus long term. that's the question that we really want to address in the long term. i think what you're seeing there is not necessarily among the public, a desire for taxes especially taxes on the wealthy to solve all the problems that they see as befalling them and their families as well as the economy overall. i think ultimately they look to the private sector, actually, to solve these kind of problems. that's really part of our history. it's part of the history of not just economic growth in this country, but equitable growth, growth that will spread evenly across all parts of the direction. so i think really what we need is a partnership, and i think this is consistent with the american public, their views of how they want inequality solved. what they want is a partnership between government and government intervention. we s

let's bring in our panel, matt mccall, simon constable from the wall stre "wall street journal" and charles fox business network. charles, i'll start with you. the august numbers lower than expected, revised numbers pretty markedly. what does that tell you? >> gigantic revision. we are stuck in a real serious rut. you have to be worried about the pegues rate, how many people getting off the sofa hitting the bricks and out of this job market. apologists say this is attriti . this is a young people phenomena. young people are not participating in this economy and not trying to find a job. that bodes ill for years to come not just right now. >> it's actually worse than it sounds. the number wasn't as good. you look at what jobs were created. retail, 44,000 of that. 160 or so,000. restaurants and bars, 27,000. temp hiring, 13,000. the highly paid manufacturing jobs aren't really coming back. >> zero construction. >> this isn't the type -- if this was a normal recovery you'd have some temporary jobs, some retail, some hospitality jobs and some really high paying jobs as well all mixed in there.
