terry mccarthy is in cairo. what's the latest there? >> reporter: good morning. as you say, there is a semblance of normality here. tahrir square behind me which was clogged with protesters is now open again to traffic. we can't see any protests there at all. all the banners have been taken down and as you go through the city, a lot of shops are open, people going back to work as normal and you get a sense the city is going back to normal. the military has tried to put these constitutions on the fast track. they have a panel looking at potential revisions and they will have a referendum within two months, which is pretty quick. i do have to say that as you go around the city, you come across these flash strikes, these pop up strikes, workers in the media industry, banks, various offices. we even saw strikes outside the archaeology department where people are demanding more money and better jobs. it seems like after the protests, everybody has agreed and think they can take it on to the streets. >> how long will the army tolerate the protests and strikes? >> repor

we talked about mccarthy. and i was taken along to a lot of civic situations and public situations where the issue of freedom of speech and the first amendment were--were predominant and very much talked about in my home. so i was raised in that environment. and that instilled in you a social conscience where you felt you could make a difference? well, i think my father really felt that one person could make a difference. he was an amazing man. i always spend a moment to talk about him, because he was blind from the age of four, and he went on to graduate summa cum laude from the university of idaho in moscow. he became a pianist and entertainer, had a wonderful career in music, but also was a-- a sort of a bit of a philosopher and loved good poetry and wrote good songs and talked to us-- all of us-- all five of us-- talked to us about life and about commitment and about the feeling that he had that one person can make a difference and does make a difference. so i was weaned on that. it was something that i al
