lbj versus mccarthy when johnson saw the polls, he was going to get killed by mccarthy, lbj drops out of the race and he drops out of the race and now it's the two peace candidates against each other without the guys that they were in the case to begin with, they battled across the primaries for the next couple of months. in 1968 five or six primaries of note. hubert humphrey got in the end of april. he didn't have to enter primaries, too late to file. most delegated would be selected. kennedy's plan was wuciÓn wipe him out, bring everybody over on my side and i will be the guy that can show everybody i can be richard nixon and hubert humphrey can. he won the primary but he didn't win by a lot o. he spent a ton of money, kennedy got 42%, he won but not by a lot. the next primary, nebraska, kennedy barely cleared 50%. he needed to knock out in oregon and mccarthy beat him in oregon. stunned it, nobody saw this coming. nobody beat a kennedy before. so california was the make or break primary on june 4th. kennedy said, you know, after losing oregon if i lose california, then i'm going to

but mccarthy was a joke. i will not even bother. he didn't want new hampshire to be lost in the shuffle. so he sat out the pledge cards. every registered voter in new hampshire it was up pledge card with the right in campaign. the people recoil. what happened to the secret ballot? to send this pledge to the state party office and then to say it is time for democrats to stand up and be counted or counted out. to use this as a heavy-handed big brother threat and this words that the headquarters. the estimated would get between five and 10% on election day came within 200 votes and then two days later he jumps in the race. so a lot of the kennedy supporters moved to bobby that mccarthy supporters would have been kennedy supporters but this terrible tension between the campaign had occurred. but when johnson saw the polls he would be killed by eugene mccarthy three days later that lbj drops out. and then to drop out of the race without the guys they were in the race begin with. bobby kennedy and mccarthy over the next couple of months.

and kennedy and mccarthy did not like each other very much either. and mccarthy, you know, faced with a far more glamorous telegenic, well-financed opponent would sort of say things like, well, he plays touch football but i play football. but kennedy was extremely good at calibrating himself to the -- these -- the larger cultural zeitgeist, to reaching out, not just to college students, all of whom -- nearly all of whom were white -- but reaching out to a multiracial coalition of democratic voters, of people who
