and of the gifts that this congress was because of speaker mccarthy. and we had those grueling votes on the house floor. and my friend and colleague garret graves and i and my friend and colleague, french hill and i, we the three of us, were a big part of the negotiating team for speaker mccarthy in his opening weeks. behind the scenes, behind the scenes and we'd set out to negotiate with republic hands on the governing document for how we'd operate this congress and divided government. democratic senate, democratic president, how what are the things we're going to try to achieve? and so i was hitched to a number of those commitments we made, in particular on the debt ceiling and in particular on how we seek to fund the government the objectives we had. and so for speaker mccarthy, he honored those pledges. and it was very difficult. and he brought garret graves and i back in to negotiate the debt ceiling in may of 23. and as a part of that, we set out spending caps with this large deficit reduction package that came as a result of the debt ceiling, th

kevin mccarthy, it took him about a full week to get the votes that. was after a midterm.e will be, i think real questions whether the house function at all on january 6th as is required to do to certify the election. i would like to tell you, like, here's what you do if that happens, but we never faced it. i think there are some workarounds. the house can, as we saw before, appoint anybody to be speaker for a certain period of time if they choose. so i imagine if they got to this scenario, and if this doesn't serve enough as a backstop for them to pick somebody, i think that's probably what happens, if they haven't picked somebody by january 6th, i would probably advise them to put forward a resolution that says, you know, generic member, you are speaker of the house for the purpose of counting this ballots for this day. doesn't sign them up to be speaker for the entire congress so they can avoid that. here again we have never done this. we are sort of making this up. i think it would create a constitutional question of what would happen at that point. uncharted territory
