mccarthy's investigations continued and later the army mccarthy hearings were televised. and it was these televised hearings where americans got to see mccarthy's abusive tactics and unsubstantiated allegations for the first time. this changed public opinion and in the view point of mcart eye and within a few months of the hearing, the senate had voted to censure mccarthy for conduct unbecoming a senator. in the early 1950s there was increasing number of media reports focused on organized crime. there was increase in americans who were concerned that this crime was becoming a serious problem and nothing was being done about it. a senator of tennessee decided to look into this and created a committee in the senate to investigate organized crime in the mob. part of his investigation involved going to different cities around the country. he went to 14 cities and interviewed law enforcement officers, politicians, to find out what the state of organized crime was in their areas. they ofn put suspected mobsters and gamblers on the stand as well and these hearings which were tel

and of the gifts that this congress was because of speaker mccarthy. and we had those grueling votes on the house floor. and my friend and colleague garret graves and i and my friend and colleague, french hill and i, we the three of us, were a big part of the negotiating team for speaker mccarthy in his opening weeks. behind the scenes, behind the scenes and we'd set out to negotiate with republic hands on the governing document for how we'd operate this congress and divided government. democratic senate, democratic president, how what are the things we're going to try to achieve? and so i was hitched to a number of those commitments we made, in particular on the debt ceiling and in particular on how we seek to fund the government the objectives we had. and so for speaker mccarthy, he honored those pledges. and it was very difficult. and he brought garret graves and i back in to negotiate the debt ceiling in may of 23. and as a part of that, we set out spending caps with this large deficit reduction package that came as a result of the debt ceiling, th

in typical republican fashion, they have no backup plan to mccarthy, so it took weeks of chaos to find a fifth contender in mike johnson. this was also the same congress that saw the expulsion of disgraced former congressman angela favorite george santos amid findings of fraud and misuse of campaign funds by the house ethics committee. again, remember that mess? there was james coleman's expedition suggesting infusion inquiries against president joe biden that went nowhere. not to mention the resignation of congressman matt gaetz, and his failed attorney general nominee. he resigned ahead of a house at the coming weeks -- house ethics report. these are allegations that he continues to deny. and the end of this congress showed us just how much of a public -- the public has no problem to shut down the government. all because elon musk threw a tantrum on x. so, we should be looking forward to it to the sailing now that republicans control the house and the senate and the white house as well, right? spoiler alert, you might be disappointed here. if anything, speaker johns her problems are

i mean, again, like it did with kevin mccarthy's speakership.t could hamper their ability to get anything done, and that is certainly not the way that donald trump would want to start his term after the inauguration. but at the same time, you know, there will be a lot of pressure on speakerjohnson, but also these individual members, people like chip roy, victoria spartz, to fall in line so that they are able to enact some of the policies that the trump administration and the president—elect himself has said that they really want to see pushed through. but, you know, you mentioned the budget fightjust before the holidays, courtney, and i was speaking to a moderate republican congressman just before that all kicked off, and i asked him, "oh, you know, are you confident that the budget bill will get passed?" and he said to me, "well, let's see who tweets next." and lo and behold, just a few hours later, we saw that message from elon musk criticising the deal. and i really wonder what the internal conversations will be like in the gop and the pressu

and in that way, this mirrors the speaker election that ultimately produced speaker kevin mccarthy at the start of the last congress. there, it was clear that only mccarthy had the momentum and the votes necessarily banked, if you will, to get to a full majority of the house to become speaker. and that process, the horse trading that went on behind the scenes as mccarthy sought to pick off his detractors one by one, ultimately led to his downfall when he made the house ungovernable. and it was several months later that a small group of republicans joined with democrats to remove him from the speakership. then we saw those rounds over several weeks of voting, as different people did raise their hands coming forward to try to become the next speaker. johnson was ultimately chosen at the end of that process, in part because he had the fewest enemies, and i think that's probably still largely true right now. even the f folks who who don't believe johnson would do a particularly good job as speaker tend to respect him, tend to think of him as a as a fairly savvy operator here, and not some
