mccaul: thank you. refugees about syrian and the threat of the iraqi refugees arrested just recently. the visa waiver was always the bigger issue we were most concerned about. you have 5,000 foreign fighters traveling through the region that have western passports that could essentially get into the u.s. without a visa. our bill addressed that. we added iraq, syria, sudan, and iran, which was to the administration's-- the ministration did not appreciate that. that would stifle, in some respects, the iranian deal from the business side. we thought from a national security perspective it was important to do that. we are working in my committee on expanding the visa waiver security program. there are a lot of things we can be doing. just looking at social media, the sanicants -- in pakistani case, the whitehead -- pakistani wife had jihad private communications that we did not know about that you would need a warrant for. at we ought to be looking social media postings for those that apply for visas, espec

congressman mccaul of texas. we are here today to talk national security and more specifically, homeland security and homeland security is a topic of significant concern to us here at hudson institute. over the past year, we released a number of major studies on issues, including a blue ribbon commission blueprint for biodefense, a commission that was co-chaired by senator leiberman and governor tom ridge that looked at the challenges we face in meeting the immense threat of bioterrorism or bio hazard and the commission's report garnered significant headlines and was the subject of hearings in both the house and the senate. and i know that we believed chairman mccaul on the findings of our report and briefed a number of other important figures on capitol hill. we have done work on cyberdefense, cyberterrorism and war fare. we were reminded last month in san bernandino that oceans are no longer enough to protect our country and keep our enemies away. isis controls vast territory in the middle east terrorizing peop

mccaul: the visa waiver process was in a unanimous bill.the syrian refugees as a threat but the idea that you have 5000 isis trained foreign fighters with western passports to me was a huge threat. a huge security gap that needed to be fixed. we fixed it in that legislation. i was disappointed to see the secretary because we put iran and there is a well. basically saying if you travel to iran, you have to apply for visas. he was trying to get around the law with a business exception. that was clearly not the intent of the bill. we didn't have that in the law.
