general, mcchrystal i want to start with what lieutenant general terry just said he said they have halted isis do you degree with that. >> i certainly don't doubt what general terry said. i would say, however, they have to halt the spread of isis in people's minds. it's convinced people around the world, but particularly in the region they're unstoppable and they're everywhere. i think the confidence of building a team's going to be the critical part. >> do you think we're approaching this in the correct way, i'm obviously at a military base should the military be doing what it's doing? >> well, i think there are certainly military activities that are necessary. but in the more broad that term you need to build a coalition that's creditable and legitimate across the region. until we sense that then i think isis is going to have a ability of going against fragmented set of forces. >> you have heard the numbers, you have heard how many believe, how many fighters they believe have been killed you were in charge in iraq if they find the leader of isis will that be a blow to this type of organ

joining me is retired general stanley mcchrystal at the helm of the u.s.arned in his book "team of teams." general, thank you for taking a few minutes and joining us this morning. i appreciate it. i want to start with you, we have this news in the last few weeks of more u.s. troops being sent to iraq to train, maybe to recruit more sunnis into the effort, the headline defense secretary ash carter was testifying before the house armed services committee on wednesday. he said the goal of getting 24,000 -- recruiting 24,000 new members of the iraqi security forces iraqis to fight for their own country, that goal had fallen short by 17,000. instead of 24,000 they got 7,000. carter said we simply haven't received enough recruits. i read that general, as a sign -- we're always talking about when will the iraqis step up. it begs the question to me are they ever going to step up. >> it's hard to say. on the eve of the 2003 entry into iraq there had been an effort on the part of the u.s. to create a free iraqi forces organization. at the end of the day, it ended up

the retired general mcchrystal who is watching these develop. closely, and author of a book "team of teams." you're a great patriot general but you've say this is bigger than any party. right? you say this is about what? >> well, think three things. first i recognize people's concerns about privacy. but i would say we're facing a threat now that is living in the 21st century and we're having a tough time getting our minds about it. isis uses terrorist tactics and uses very defendant battlefield tactics as well but really excels on the internet with digital media and allows them to get their fear out to people but also to do recruiting around the world and to franchise their movement. >> how would any of this stuff general, deal with that? >> we've got to be effective in the digital world and we can't pretend that's not where they operate effectively. so we have to make a decision on where it is -- i think it will constantly be refined to be honest because the digits exist and they're out there. but we are going to have to admit we have to fight
