then you have jon mcclain associate justice on the supreme court who was lincoln's choice in 1856 for the nomination. quite old at this time. he dies in march 1861. and then you have a lincoln who has become quite famous at this point. some for his debates with douglas in 1868 in his reunion speech in february 1860. much more well-known and the north by this point. lincoln is not going to go to the convention. it's not normal for people who are presidential candidates to go to convention. conventions are very serious affairs. i was looked down upon in the 19th century for presidential candidates to actually run for president. other people ran for you. so lincoln sends his one of his closest friends to chicago. too basically run his nomination foran him. this person is david davis. he was a judge on the eighth judicial circuit in illinois. had gone back many, many years. the use lincoln as a lawyer. lincoln served on the eighth judicial circuit in davis' stead. several times they had longer work together and laugh together. they were great friends. until davis goes to chicago and works
