that was before the war and was immediately sent to fort mcclellan, alabama. and at that time, why the divisions did their own training and, later, during the war, of course, they changed. had folks designed to refill the replacements. so i went immediately into the h 22nd infantry regiment, and assigned to the mortar, 81 millimeter mortar, department. that's where i spent my earliest training. had a west point graduate as a company commander. so i had a good one. he was really tough but fair. that was all the -- well, the pre-war kinds of things was maneuvers in louisiana and in carolinas. and at that time, the 4th division was called the motorized infantry division. and they were designed to try to discover what kind of formation and organization we should have that would compare with hitler's mechanized outfit that was running across europe at the time. eventually, they changed us back to a regular infantry division before we went overseas in 1944. tommy: can you tell me a little bit about your training and then a little bit about the louisiana maneuvers? d
