mcconnell: well, good afternoon, everyone. here we are. as you may recall, i said back in february, the way forward on the debt ceiling was for the speaker and the president to sit down and discuss the matter. it took the president months to accept the reality that in divided government, in a debt ceiling situation, is the time for negotiations. in fact, seven out of the last 10 debt ceilings have included other items. and now the drama is in the house, we anticipate the bill passing and coming over to us as soon as tomorrow. we had a healthy discussion at lunch about the pros and cons. i would say that most of my members who have objections would like to do more of the things that are already in the bill. i think speaker mccarthy should be congratulated on capturing a number of priorities and the best way to look at the difference -- two years ago we were in the process of spending 1dz.9 -- $1.9 trillion and then last year another $750 billion. so we've gone from one party spending $2.7 trillion in two years to a discussion about actually

we know speaker mccarthy and republican leader mcconnell plan to go to the meeting on may 9.ublicans insist they will not back a so-called clean debt ceiling. that is the only thing the president says he will accept, hence our major problem. in addition, we have dynamics in the house of representatives. i want to look at what we are facing. speaker mccarthy has a four majority. in addition, as part of the deal to become speaker, he agreed to a rule allowing any member to force a vote on his own removal. in other words, a clean debt bill should come down to it if mccarthy feels it is right to do. politically, it would be suicide for him. mccarthy needs something to appease his base. on one hand, pragmatic good news foep is the big deal, we are not worried about the debt ceiling. they are worried about it, they don't want to risk default. their base is fired up about what they say is a title wave of red ink and they need this to spend cut -- get spending cuts. >> there is reason to worry, the deadline coming near. we have come close before. we all remember the 2011 fiscal cliff
