mccormick. they reported an okay quarter. the spice company results would have been incredibly robust. they think china will eventually turn. i think mccormick stock would've soared today. thanks to this relentless tsunami of selling it ended up plummeting nearly 8.5%. that's spilling over to what i'm looking at. we like mccormick for its single-digit growth. the company has been acquiring hot sauces and mustard. all sorts of things. something we learned in the pandemic is really good and cheaper. with the rates going nuts managers will give something like mccormick any credit. not when the stock sells for 25 times earnings. when rates go higher wall street pays less for future earnings as demonstrated and viewed upon by that multiple 25. it should be smaller. the stocking to go lower. it's rewarding for middling growth we slaughter it because it's not going fast enough to justify its valuation. we used to want it for its bland qualities and has been washed away thanks to the action. what i'm saying is we are going to pay les

chief correspondent of global macro markets, liz mccormick. would we -- do you think we would be hearing this kind of messaging from fed officials if we were talking about these multi-year highs for yields in the bond market? liz: yeah, i don't think so. for a while there was a lot of people saying there is crickets from the fed. do they not care? as we know, the fed has been trying to figure out -- and it is not an easy process -- if they are restrict ive enough. but these yields breaking so high, it seems to have kind of brought this corral of fed speakers saying the bond market is doing the work for us. i think investors have taken solace in that saying, maybe the worst is over. of course, we have minutes tomorrow. that will show is more of they were thinking. we have consumer price data thursday and inflation data friday. we have been through this. things could change but there is a feeling of relief. stocks and bonds doing well today. maybe the fed is done but that will prove to be seen, but that seems to be what the fed is saying. maybe

liz mccormick talking about bonds. thanks for that. let's discuss with s&p's global chief economist paul gruenwald. thank you for coming in. what do you make of the labor market after this jobs number? not only was it a huge beat in the u.s. but triple across canada. paul: we have been watching this movie play out all year. we keep expecting the market to slow down because the fed and other banks are raising rates. we keep getting these strong numbers. as your colleagues describe, it was not necessarily all that. we got lower wage growth and pocket of softness. but this points to the fact the fed -- maybe the market will do the work of the fed. but the november rate hike is not off the table. matt: the fed is working across purposes. as they try to tighten financial conditions, the u.s. government hands out more money, blowing up bigger deficits. hsbc today said they were wrong on the bond market. i will quote directly from the story. shares of mccormick trading lower this morning a. mccormick is not alone in the stock struggles.agra and lamb weston with similar declines as they prepare to result. all of this with the retail consumer staples with the latest on the table. we have our bull case and our bear case with our guests. matt, let's kick off with you. we have had a number of guests singing the the praises of stap with higher for longer rates weighing on the market. >> part of it is the issue of the market. the biggest thing on the broad case is we have the situation where the bond market has been pricing in higher for longer for six months now. the stock market has not. just starting to in recent weeks. we have a diffivergence with th stock market and bond market. that is resolved with the stock market coming down more. i think people need to get defensive. a lot has to do with the technicals. we see the xlp etf becoming oversold. the most oversold in half a dozen years. the same thing with some of the individual stocks which are finally becoming cheap. i'm afraid the entire group is not cheap. there are

liz mccormick joins us now on this run up any we have seen and -- this run-up in yields we have seen. they continue to get higher and higher. what do you think is going on, the bond vigilante is back? >> i was saying to someone earlier, let's not use that title because it brings its own issues sometimes but i would say in the sense that the bond investors are saying, we, and some conversation and there is too much risk especially in the long end of the treasury market to park our money with you if you don't get more yield, -- compensation. that comes from a lot of what abigail said, they will -- labor market remains strong. adp wish -- was off today and we have a plethora bond supply from the u.s. government that has darted to pick up and will continue to pick up well into next year and we have the deficit in the fed getting out of the bond building business. i heard ray dalio on tv with you saying inflation will stay sticky around 3.5% and that adds to you when a higher yield at the long end of the market and it is coming together. matt: do you have any sense that some of this at lea

mike mckee and liz mccormick joins us, how far away is 2%? liz: i am not avoiding this question, but i would say that powell says they do not know either. i think the dot says 2025. with this data there is a core of people saying that the next leg down will be tough. we might stay at 3% or 4% but this just embolden the case that they are talking about longer rates helping them you cannot write off that the fed does not have to do more to gin up the church rectory downwards -- the trajectory downwards. i do not anyone thinks that this mike: will happen next year. i do not need to say anything, liz said it all. the fed does not think we will get to 2% on pes -- on pce until 2026. they are not anticipating a smooth lie down either. the numbers were disappointed -- disappointing, so the 2% handle that we had on a shorter-term trajectory has gone away. and that has to concern the fed, but not enough yet. that will be a key question. it will be a closer decision when we get to november 1 and the markets are pricing. they probably do not do it but l
