who was robert mccormick?amela: robert mccormick was the owner and publisher of the chicago tribune in the years between the two world wars. he was an artillery officer in world war i, had inherited the paper from his father, and he was a newspaperman to the core. peter: how would you describe his work? pamela: he was fascinated by world politics. he was fascinated by the military. he also was an isolationist. he was antisemitic in sort of a reflex way. much in the way that he was presbyterian and inherited an identity that he had not thought three very much, he had hesitations about the east coast of the united states, was anti-england, and gradually came to go from disliking franklin roosevelt to actively hating him and that combination of isolationism and being anti-roosevelt shaped much of his policies around the paper but at the same time, he was just interested in putting out a good paper. so he hired good people and pretty much let them run the stories they thought needed to be told. peter: one of those

mccormick just said.lked about his position on abortion, but it is different than it was just two years ago when you asked that question. your question was very specific. what exceptions do you support, and he said life of the mother, not an exception for rape or incest. his words now are a big change. but when the decision is made to overturn roe v. wade, his reaction was that that decision made him very very happy. so that is where he's been on this issue. and when you talk about elle fanning in other states, a woman in florida hemorrhaging before she had to go on a ventilator for life was saved. i don't think we want to see that in pennsylvania. >> should there be any restrictions on abortion? >> i support roe v. wade. roe v. wade with the consensus across the country. it would allow reasonable restrictions, that is what i support. >> mr. mccormick, 30 seconds. >> do you see that, no person has changed. senator casey said he wanted to overturn roe v. wade. he was only for one exception. now he is sayin

the better trump does the better mccormick will do.people who will split heir tickets they will vote for trump and vote for casey. to the extent that donald trump does better he will pull them across the finish line. >> bret: ohio has been swing states. this time senate race. sherrod brown and bernie moreno. very close according to the average of polls. how does it look on the ground? >> well, we have had about 1.4 million ohioans who have cast ballots since we started early voting here in on october 8th. we have two weekends of voting coming up. republicans are returning early ballots in higher numbers than democrats right now. but that could be just a matter of republicans are so banking their votes, essentially, rather than waiting until election day. this race is the most expensive u.s. senate race in ohio history. about $270 million being spent and almost all of the ads are negative. negative sherrod brown or negative bernie moreno. >> bret: that's amazing. those numbers. if you go around the country it's massive. check in with al

recent polls have shown casey ahead of mccormick, but within the margin of error.a candidates faced off this weekend, a contentious second debate. how are democrats feeling about the race right now? >> again, we know that pennsylvania, being a battleground, we have always had thin margins when it came to, you know, winning elections. is on 2016, the election in pennsylvania was decided by 44,000 votes and in 2020 decided by 80,000 votes. we are used to a thin margin race and it really being tight, itches like democrats are on the ground, not taking their foot off the grass, knocking on doors and talking to voters and really explaining how senator bob casey has really delivered for pennsylvania, whether that be the inflation act that was done recently that really addressed the cost of drug prices, or whether that be bipartisan infrastructure. remember i-95 collapsing, but because of his work in washington, d.c., we were able to rebuild it in less than a month. or whether you talk about the issue of maternal mortality where we know black women are three times more li

everybody is looking at mccormick.. >> lawrence: what do you see happening? >> this is trending mccormick's way he has momentum and money laid down. one of the few states where wisconsin actually had more future ad buys than democrats. i think mccormick is doing the best job of any senate candidate tying his opponent to kamala harris and her record. bob casey, his father was bob casey senior pro-life democrat. not allowed to go to democratic national convention in 1929 because he was pro-life. the party is becoming more extreme that way. this guy is basically do no harm. been no record of accomplishment. been there too long. the fact that mccormick is keeping incumbent under 50% is a big deal. >> lawrence: wisconsin. >> tammy baldwin in the government for 30 years. and if you can name a single accomplishment of hers. i will give you a thousand dollars.
