joining us now is republican congressman rich mccormick of georgia. congressman, thank you so much for being with us. first, i just want to see if you have any update for us on house speaker johnson and democrats finding some alternative to this bill, a cr that would keep the government open past tomorrow night. >> yeah, unfortunately, all of us are working off of just rumors right now. we don't have a long term plan. we don't have a short term plan. some people are talking about shutting down the government. some people are doing a clean cr. it'll be interesting to see what the speaker comes up. he's negotiated both with the blessings of jeffries, but also the president, ellen, vivek, anybody else who has a seat at the table who can control the media, control the narrative, control our constituents opinions. that's where this is in play right now. >> congressman, you've previously said you knew you were a no coming in. actually, i literally just got handed an update. congressman, i'm learning this as i'm speaking to you. it sounds like members are no

mccormick: thank you, mr. scott and mr. speaker. i rise in strong support of the rule for providing consideration of h.r. 7673, the service member quality of life improvement and national defense authorization act. i'm confident that this year's ndaa will have a lasting, positive impact on our national security, and i urge my colleagues to support the rule providing its consideration. the fiscal year 2025 ndaa authorized targeted responsible investments in critical technologies, and fuhr capabilities while restoring our military's focus and lethality. i served with sailors, marines, and army folks from all walks of life during my time on active duty. we all bled green -- we all bled red and green in heart and all united in our mission to protect the united states. putting our differences under the microscope only divides us and distraction us from our mission so i am pleased that the ndaa gets things like d.e.i. and critical race theory out of the military's divisive issues. i'm also glad it re-authorizes language i put in last year

joining us now, republican congressman rich mccormick of georgia. congressman, thanks so much for joining us. i know you're one of the 34 republicans who voted against this spending bill. why did you vote against what the president elect trump wanted? >> well, in my opinion, there has to be a conservative conscience. and i believe that u.s. 34 kind of we're the original doge, if you will. we're the people who are conservative. we believe that the crs that we keep on voting for are really, in this case, an omnibus or a minibus, if you will. >> we've done nothing in two years. and when i came up here, i promised to address the debt crisis. >> and it is a crisis. as a matter of fact, right now, that trillion dollars of interest that we're paying this year is taking up a considerable amount of the, the, the, the money we spend in congress already. and then add to that, in about nine years, 45% of our entire budget will be spent on interest payments on our debt. if we continue what we're doing right now, we simply can't do that anymore. our children dese

were supportive, the joyce foundation of the study of the act, the mccormick foundation about training individual journalists and groups that can help -- help journalists learn how to not go away. believe it or no. even though you think that's an instinct. they have to know the laws and they're standing on the right foot in order to be able to get this kind of information. now i think it was ann wiseman who said that we need another ralph nader for this time. i'd like to point out we do have one. so what i think we really need is everyone to summon their inner ralph naiders and learn themselves. how do you -- how to use the freedom of information laws in your state, at the federal level, how to bring this kind of litigation and train the lawyers who will do enforcement of these laws. and the, i want to conclude by thanking the center for study of responsive law and everybody who has participated in making this event such a long and thorough observation of the 1974 amendments to the 1966 freedom of information act. thank you and thank you again for the media here and to c-span.
