i'm q mccray. back to you inside. kimberly: the white nationalist rally centered on plans to remove the statue of robert e. lee from emancipation park. charlott grappled what to do with its confederate monuments. some say they are symbols of the civil war, representing our heritage. others see hate and oppression. in may, hundreds of torch carrying protesters stood at the base of the statue, organized by richard spencer, who also took part in today's rally. more than a thousand people demonstrated against a ku klux klan rally back in july. more than two dozen people were arrested in the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. the removal of the statue is being challenged in court. a while that was going on, a virginia state police helicopter crashed about a mile from the campus of uva, killing two pilots. the helicopter had been helping with the public safety during the charlottesville protests. >> there was a helicopter that crashed in the woods. no structures were damaged. we have two the pilot and a passenger.
