and the okhoma-based oil and gas company called kerr-mcgee decided to open up a brand new facility in oklahoma in 1965 that would build nuclear fuel rods out of uranium and plutonium. these were fuel rods that were going to be used in nuclear reactors all over the country. well, one of the local residents who took a job at that new facility in crescent was a 26-year-old named karen silkwood. she worked as a lab tech, processing plutonium for use in nuclear fuel rods. karen silkwood was also a union rep and she started raising safety concerns about what was happening in the plant. accidents, safety standards, workers potentially being poisoned by the radioactive material they were working with. karen silkwood was on her way to meet with a reporter for the "new york times" to talk about those concerns at the plant when she died on the way to that meeting. she died in a one-car crash. >> in november 1974 karen silkwood died when her car ran off this highway and struck a culvert wall 25 miles north of oklahoma city. silkwood had been on her way to tell a reporter about what she believed w
