i'm derek mcginty. jan has the evening off. a sigh of relief tonight for the family of caitlyn virts. she is safe and her dad is behind bars. mola lenghi joins us with the latest on this breaking story. we just heard about this literally 45 minutes ago. >> just getting this in. 11-year-old caitlyn virts was found and appears unharmed according to baltimore county authorities. caitlyn and her father timothy virts were located in a motel in florence, south carolina, a city right on i-95 about an hour east of the capital columbia. it appears they were headed straight down i-95. police say caitlyn was abducted by her father after he murdered her mother early yesterday morning. the mother was found dead inside her home in dundalk, maryland, but caitlyn was nowhere to be found. an amber alert was launched and was soon expanded to a nationwide amber alert. investigators say that was the key to finding the two, the nationwide amber alert. timothy virts is in custody awaiting extradition back to maryland and detectives are expected to t

derek mcginty has the night off. topper has an eye on the coastal storm. topper. >> a coastal storm gives us a glancing blow, and if you're a snow lover, it's going to be a lost opportunity. if you don't like snow, we're in good shape. tracking the coastal storm, the same time frame hasn't really changed, thursday night into friday. thursday night, light snow is possible, actually south and west of town, maybe as close as culpeper, and we could see a flake in the metro area friday morning and just chilly with showers on frida and obviously, more showers south and east because the storm is moving south and east of us. the area of low pressure hits the gulf tomorrow. as it moves off to the east, a little bit of light snow or a mix breaks out late tomorrow night, early on friday morning, and then just rain as it glances from showers, most of the showers will be in calvert county, st. mary's county into the northern neck. thankfully, it then moves on out to sea and we salvage a decent saturday, which is some good news there, some consolation. wake-up weather,

derek mcginty has the night off and topper is tracking a coastal storm that may come too close for comfort for us in the metro area. how worried do we need to be now? >> on the low end of worried. the cold air in place. any time we have cold air and a coastal storm we perk our ears up. we're looking ahead at a coastal storm and the time frame is thursday evening into friday. right now it looks like a miss or near miss for the metro area. we'll monitor it closely because cold air is already in place. there's the storm coming out of the gulf of mexico, cold air down into the carolinas, big area of high pressure in maine which is a classic setup. we get into thursday night clouds will start to move in, rain south of us. then we get into thursday night and friday morning. a little patch of snow is possible, rain into southern maryland, but one model has the storm hitting later, friday night and saturday. that would mean plain rain. if it gets here thursday night into friday, that would be a mixture of snow to the north and rain to the south. it will be a very close call either way. now we're n

i'm derek mcginty. >> i'm jan jeffcoat. happy friday, everybody. >>> we are heading into another weekend with unfortunately another winter storm on the horizon. meteorologist erica grow in tonight for top. >> we're going to give you a timeline to start off on this approaching winter storm. the time frame is starting around 6 p.m. sunday possibly for suburbs south and west ending by 2 p.m. monday at the latest. the effect will be greatest for your monday morning commute. the main threat will be the likelihood of accumulating snow, but the roadways shouldn't be bad because of how warm our temperatures have been. the higher elevations will be most likely to see the accumulating snow and will see more snow basically throughout the entirety of this event. we'll skip ahead on 9 futurecast to sunday. this is what the storm will look like as it's approaching. we're dry through noon, but then you can see at 7 p.m. that leading edge of the snowfall approaching. i'll time it out with 9 castand at the seven-day coming up. >>> we have c
