mike mckee, what are you looking at? mike: the divergence between equities and bonds may get highlighted by whatever happens today. if we get a bang on number, everyone trades the way they did. if it is really weak or strong, that will cause people to start thinking about recession or the fact that the fed will have to go more. interesting to see what the headline number will be today. you have this fork in the road. as yogi berra once said, when you see a fork in the road, take it. it is probably going to be another month or two because these are backward looking numbers. the problem is we have not gotten a contraction in the past in jobs created until after a recession has started. if you believe recession is underway, you could see this happening. but economists have never forecasted in advance a decline in jobs. it will be interesting to see how long it takes to get there, if we get there. tom: mike, i want to talk about this canard of a fully employed america. it is baloney. are we fully employed? randall: the only

i am going to do what michael mckee did to esther george.going to ask how much unemployment is too much? brett: from the fed's perspective, that is one thing we are looking to hear from chair powell -- what is the role of labor supply constrained in their inflation band-aid? before, you headed estimated around 4.5%. however, now with lower foreign workers, less legal immigration, that could be closer to 5%. we want to hear chair powell direct that tomorrow. do they think labor is higher relative to the prior cycle? how much pain they willing to take in terms of the trade-off between employment and inflation? kriti: how much are they willing to take, how much pain? can we talk inflation, there are estimates that it will go to 3% or 4% next year. isn't that concerning, the case? -- the pace? brett: the fed has a job to do. as george said, inflation is job number one. they want to see evidence. it is not just getting to three. is going back to 2%. as michael noted, the stickier portions of inflation are going to remain for some time. they need

let's talk to mike mckee.e is the economics and porro does policy corresponded joining us from jackson hole. what do you think? michael: at wall street you see the bears today, but they don't out here you don't see the bears. i would assume at this point the fed is not going to have a measure that would encourage people to sell their assets. but they would not mind if they do, because if they cut financed desk if they tighten financial conditions, which is what they're worried about, everyone here is focused on that. the idea that wall street is tightening the fed, the question is how does powell disabuse that idea. kailey: what languages he avoiding? is it as much about what he doesn't say is what he does? michael: and always is. and the question is how do they portray the idea that they will go farther than anyone a people think because they are willing to risk recession. they don't want to say that, they will say there might be pain, unemployment might rise some. but the argument is it is low enough the eco

michael mckee, we thank you for your coverage with the team over the next two days. let's get to the story of positioning. joining us is priya misra from td securities. let me put to you the question i put to michael mckee, is chairman powell set up to fail given how hawkish the market is? priya: thanks for having me. i think the market is setting up for a hawkish message. if the market is looking for chair powell to tell us if this is a 50 or 75 basis point hike, i think you are going to be disappointed. chair powell is going to say they are data tended -- they are data dependent. there is still another report before that meeting. i think what the market is setting up for is that the fed is not relenting on its inflation credibility or a clear commitment to slowdown the hike. the market has been struggling with the threshold, what is the threshold to stop the hike and then cut rates? we have already priced in all of these events. i don't think we get a lot of clarity. the market is setting up for a hawkish message for the fed to say the data remains strong, we remai

kriti: always reassuring, bloomberg's michael mckee. let's push now to market reaction. the libor rate rose for the fourth straight session, now the highest since november of 2008 following the hawkish comments from the fed reserve officials. alex, thank you for joining us. you have a long history of reporting on these markets. walk us through the market reaction. how justified is this? will we see more of that bond volatility? alex: the interesting thing is that libor i don't think is a leading indicator anymore. the way the methodology has been restructured in the post manipulation years, it's using a trait to underlie. one day fed bets are going higher, those will feed back into the life or fixing so libor will then move higher. i think it's more of a trailing indicator. the interesting thing is that we watch very closely. what that is telling me is that as traders bet on treasury, betting on the fed be in more hawkish. you will see a demand for overnight borrowing. that is actually going to push repo rates lower. and that we also need to keep watching as well. june 3

jonathan: mike mckee are chairman powell? tom: let's bring in the bloomberg economics writer with an exceptionally aggressive writer -- outlook for inflation. let me begin with the simple question. if we get on and on long interest rate-- an anna wong interest rate regime, what happens to american economic growth? anna: as powell says, what is the bedrock of american growth? it is price stability. it would be good for american growth if it was price stability. tom: but what would it mean for unemployment and jobs? when you work through three quarters and a 4% -- a 5% interest rate, how do you model that with labor in america? anna: it is about real interest rate. even if underlying inflation is running at 3%, a 5% nominal interest rate is the real interest rate. if it is a real interest rate of 2% or 1.5%, if that is the case, i think that would be a normal way of things. as the fed is tightening, there will be impact on the labor market, and that is the cost the fed will pay for being slightly delayed in tightening monetary

here is mike mckee.ike: it is the same story with the jobless claims that we have seen the last couple of weeks, a small rise. 260,000. last week, 256. that is not the revised number. the revised the number we are waiting to come up. we will see what that was. trade balance comes in lower than forecast, $79.6 billion, down from 85.5. the forecast was 80. that is another addition to second-quarter growth, which is not a bad thing. we are down 5000, decrease in the jobless claims number last week. this week, we are waiting to see where we come up with a new number in terms of what the change was. the important number here is becoming different. continuing claims from now on. if you lose a job, are you getting a job with all of these openings? we see continuing claims ris. o an increase their. re. with all the job openings we have, the fed's theory is that if you lose a job you can get another one. last week, 260 they revised it to -- 254, rather. an increase of 6000 from last week. tom: with all your years

i want to listen to michael mckee.important is what he doesn't say, what he will not address is the international economy. it is ugly in europe. jonathan: will he address this market? lisa: does he feel comfortable how much it has rallied? still hanging in. is this ok for him? will he go back to the line we heard last month that even though the market has rallied -- it has had enough to get it done or do we need something more hawkish to keep things where they are because people are expecting hawkish nests? jonathan: the ecb, looking for another 50 basis points and maybe after that another 50. the euro is weaker. lisa: even a one percentage point increase in european rates is not enough to strengthen this europe which raises -- this euro which raises the theme we will hear, has monetary policy lost its potency in an era of supply chain disruption? how does the european project deal with that when inflation is becoming a spiral with the importation through a weaker euro? tom: the smartest app -- sai saw today, sir howar

mike mckee will be leading the coverage on friday. we thank him for his insight. talk more about the federal reserve and the markets, the labor market crucially, is tom porcelli, rbc capital markets. let's start with the labor story. the payroll number, to what extent do we need a miss to show the economy is not in as dire of a situation? tom: well, good to be with you. i think there is a mountain of data that basically already highlights that the labor market is starting the process of slowing down. right? that is not a gas anymore. the only outlier has been the payroll report. i am happy to rattle off these different indicators showing softness. a couple would be jobless claims. yesterday's confidence report -- it is funny everyone is making a big deal about how confidence rose. if you really look at the labor differential, which matters to this conversation, it continues to deteriorate. employment metrics are below break even in manufacturing and services. it goes on. the only thing that defined all of that was the payroll report. i would say today's adp is mor

michael mckee, what a legend. we thank him for staying late on his birthday. look at the market impact with the macro man. cameron, you have great notes today to put this into context. the market reaction was pretty obvious and so was the reading overall. but what -- jay powell cannot get enthusiastic yet. is this compelling evidence of the moderation in inflation? cameron: no, because it is only one data point. we do not know what the future holds. from a statistical perspective, you need more than one observation to render definitive or compelling judgment. if you want to look on the sour side of things, the fed meeting cpi, which lines up every piece of stuff and ranks them from the top to the bottom, that reached a new high. 6.2% year on year, albeit receding from 0.27%. that is above what anyone would consider to be price stability or where the fed needs inflation to go. jon: as we continue to chew on these data points, i saw you writing today you are interested in looking ahead to the next retail sales reading. how come? cameron: one of the issues along
