let's bring in our david mckenzie, following developments from beijing. and david, after months of secret negotiation, the united states and china took everyone by surprise by announcing this historic agreement on chie mat change. how is it going to work? and are the ambitious goals actually doable? >> well, we'll have to wait and see, rosemary. certainly they are ambitious goals. on the u.s. side, they're saying they're going to accelerate producing co 2 emissions significantly. in fact, doubling those reductions to between 26 and 28% by 2025. this means that the u.s. is going to have to really shift its economy substantially into clean energy, something that president obama has talked about a lot creptly. and then on the chinese side, it's also truly historic, because the chinese say they're going to peak their co 2 emissions by 2030. that's the first time they said they'll have a cutoff point. they'll also really have a substantial part of their energy done by clean energy sources like nuclear and wind and solar power in the coming years. how they will

david mckenzie joins us live from beijing with more about his visit. >> reporter: that's right, it's a crucial trip for president obama to the asia region. especially here to china. he'll have several meetings with president xi jinping. and since the obama administration announced this pivot to asia or what they like to call a rebalance in asia to show the u.s. is committed to its asia-pacific allies there's been a great deal of mistrust between china and the u.s. on issues like you mentioned of cyber security and others. chinese leaders and thinkers are criticizing the u.s. for trying to contain the rise of china in the asia-pacific while the u.s. is suspicious of china's role in the region, particularly its increasing flexing of its military muscles when it comes to disputes in the east china region, east asia region. one with of good news was the meeting between xi jinping and prime minister abe today. that was a long time in the making and does show that there is a warming of relations between japan and china which has been incredibly frosty for at least two years. >> what common

david mckenzie joins us live with more details. given problems at home how much influence would he have in china when it comes to human rights? >> reporter: john, he's still the commander in chief of the u.s., of course. and that carries a lot of weight still around the world. including here in china. though state media gave him a rubbing before he arrived, certainly this will be a crucially important set of meetings between xi jinping and president obama on the side lines of apec mutual day-lateral meetings. and one issue that could be on the table is human rights. since president xi jinping of china came into power, human rights groups say that he has tightened the screws on the press, on civil society, and on activists. and one prominent activist we spoke to says this is an opportunity for president obama to bring those issues up. the gleaming towers of beijing. an image the rule is communist party wants to show off. but there's another side to the chinese capital. in an apartment complex called freedom city, evidence of the par

let's bring in david mckenzie who has been following the developments from beijing.t's not often that a chinese president will actually talk about human rights. what did xi jinping have to say? >> on human right, certainly, john, he was at least just being there, showing up for the press conference that he could take questions from foreign reporters is extremely unusual. i want to start, though, with the climate change deal that these two countries have announced. it's very significant indeed. the chinese are saying they cap emissions by 2030, and maybe even before that. now that might seem like a long time away, but that's in fact the first time the chinese have ever announced some some kind of climate action and anti-co2 action. then there is the u.s. side they're going to significantly reduce according to barack obama their co2 emissions. the u.s. president said this was a historic deal. take a listen. >> this is an ambitious goal, but it is an achievable goal. it will double the pace at which we're reducing carbon pollution in the united states. it putt puts us o
