president mckinley is holding a public reception. people filed through to shake his hand, to talk to him, to meet him. and at that public reception, president mckinley was assassinated. he was shot twice in the abdomen by a guy who had lined up with all the rest of the public for a chance to get within literally arm's length of the president. mckinley actually survived the initial aftermath of the shooting, but he was dead by the end of the week. there is now a monument to president mckinley in buffalo, new york. i think it's sort of a big apology. it sits outside of city hall. it's a big obelisk. but look at the base of it. those are carved sleeping lions at the base of the obelisk, which is a little bit of a weird choice, sleeping lions, right? since lions are basically there to look like fierce protectors of the principle of the obelisk. but they're asleep. so they're not doing much protecting. before president mckinley was killed at the world's fair in buffalo, before him, it was president james a. garfield who was killed. garfie

here for instance is president william mckinley or adding to a big crowd in 1901. notice, there are no microphones in front of him to amplify his voice. that's because they hadn't been invented yet. back in those days politicians needed to project their voice to be heard by a large audience. and here you can see just a portion of the enormous crowd that mckinley is speaking to addressing big crowds like this was definitely a challenge to the speaker's vocal cords. now in film and audio recordings came along they provided another potential outlet for presidential messaging. however, early movies were silent and audio recordings of a president like this recording of a november 1921. speech by president warren g harding could only be experienced long after the fact on a record player. but all of that would change dramatically in the 1920s when a new mass medium arrived on the scene one that for the first time gave national politicians the ability to speak to audiences of hundreds of thousands and ultimately millions of people and to do it live this new medium was comm

roosevelt and woodrow wilson the porter that you see here of president mckinley was painted after his assassination using photographs and previous artistic portrayals and harry murphy actually beat a bunch of male artists to win this presidential commission. so his success is a painter is especially impressive as many women were excluded from the fine arts and the early 20th century next slide. however, as the century went on presidential portraits painted by women became more prevalent and one of these women is elizabeth schumachov who painted two american presidents and a first lady now schumachov was born in russia actually present-day ukraine and she took art lessons informally as a child, but her family permanently left russia following the october bolshevik revolution in 1917. like many of the artists will discuss today. she resettled in the united states, but following the tragic and unexpected passing of her husband. she needed a way to support her family. and so she turned to her artistic hobby to support them. luckily. she was very talented and she became a well known painte
